If this was for the HipZip, then it's not going to happen. To hear the #vorbis people talk, the proposed contract was completely evil, to the stage where it needed to be signed in blood.

RE the list: I'd love to put my name down. However, I think it might be useful for you to indicate what country the people come from.
Jan S.
You can put my name there too.

I'm in.
Check your PM, Benjamin. smile.gif

Btw. you should add your email to the original message, so that guests can also participate.

I've created a news item on the front page to raise awareness of this matter. Hopefully it will help to attract more people to the list smile.gif

Ogg support would be pretty cool, so I'm all in for that, but do you have to hand them a list of addresses they can freely spam to?

Anyway, I think a count of 100 is a bit low. Something like 250 would be better.

That's one of the reasons I NEVER sign any internet petition.

Principally those that are passed by mail.

Hi,

thx for all the interest smile.gif

But I see some problems with this kind of petition, i have to enter everything manually. Isn't there a possibility to have a online petition going around where everyone interested can sign virtually ?

Well sure you could setup a website where people could enter their information and submit it to some sort of database or something, but you'd have to figure out how to do that first smile.gif

It shouldn't really be that difficult though.

So is this petitiononline.com your official petition list now?
If it is, maybe edit the original message again? smile.gif
Benjamin Lebsanft
yes i think this is the better way!
Benjamin Lebsanft
I think we should wait until we have 1000 signatures, how do you think about this ?
Benjamin Lebsanft
I've contacted jackie from the audiograbber site and doom9. If they mention the petition there'll be a lot more signatures i suppose biggrin.gif

Hopefully both are convinced!
Midian
nice idea...

just added my name to the list smile.gif

It's at my news page now wink.gif

Good job about using PetitionOnline - now the signatures are at least verified through email (but the addresses at least not made public), giving it a whole lot more added value. I'll sign this. smile.gif

Agreed, seeing as there are already around 100 signatures in this little time. 1000 is a so much more impressive number. tongue.gif
Benjamin Lebsanft
Thx for all your support!

I have written to philips, iriver and sonicblue asking for vorbis support. If they do not plan it I asked them for a number of interested people for this to become interesting. If they answer me I'll let you know how many people we need smile.gif
everwicked
Mate!

It doesn't matter how many people they need. We will just make this HUGE and FORCE them into Vorbis biggrin.gif
Benjamin Lebsanft
i don't have a problem with this biggrin.gif

I signed in too.

From the side of the hardware manufacturers there should be big interest in a GPL audio codec like Vorbis. Right now they have to pay license fees to Fraunhofer for every single MP3 capable CD player they sell ....

BTW : Any known plans of having hardware decdoding support for Vorbis ( DSP, etc. ) ?? Sorry if i missed something ....
Negative Zero
Yup! iRiver has already announced support.

hi all.

i am planning to design a hardware decoder( player) with a dsp563XX in the year. maybe it will be realized by the end of the year, i hope so if possible.

i also had talked it with Monty on about last christmas day.

now i had finished a mp3 recoder with an AD DSP chip, and a manufacturer will produce it in May.
so first i will maybe first develop ogg decoder in the DSP chip.

thanks.
gnoshi
You are talking about a specific DSP chip for decoding ogg vorbis, rather than using a processor (eg. an ARM or somthing the like) for the decoding?

Just out of interest, how would this compare cost-wise to using a generic processor, and how would it cope with future changes to vorbis (post 1.0)?

Either way, cool =)

thnx

gnoshi
Benjamin Lebsanft
Hi,

I got this mail from IRiver so i think it is for sure that they'll support ogg vorbis. Does anyone know where to get IRiver products in Europe ?

QUOTE
Dear Benjamin

Thank you for your interest in iRiver product.

iRiver has planning to support Ogg Vorbis in the future with firmware upgrade. Please kindly wait.

If you have any enquiry, please feel free to contact me.

which processor will you use exactly ? the whole dsp563xx family shares the same object code, but different models have different built-in peripherials. peripherials includes : filter co-processoer,viterbi co-processoer, spdif support, and so on...

and how are you planning to implement the decoder ? are you planning to modify the c source-code, or will you write it from scratch in asm56300 ?
what will be the storage media ?

last question for today ( cool.gif ), will you publish yr sources biggrin.gif ?

Vorbis' license is much freeier than GPL smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

As we have reached 1070+ signatures in the meantime i have sent mails to some manufacturers ( sony, philips, dioneer, sonic blue, apple) but didn't get an answer yet. So if anyone has the time please send a mail to your favorite manufacturer demanding for ogg vorbis support and include a link to my petition. Thanks!!!
Sawg
Just because I am lazy and the more people mailing the better. Do you have the list of e-mail addresses you used?
Benjamin Lebsanft
Here is the response from sonic blue, i think they send this mail to everyone asking for anything other then wma, mp3. Shouldn't it be possible to use iriver firmware in sonicblue products ?

Hi,

to my information the sonic blue models are the same as the ones from
IRiver. So why does IRiver support ogg vorbis and sonicblue doesn't. I can't
understand it and many other customers won't too. I think if you won't
support it, many people will not buy sonic blue products but the ones from
IRiver instead. I think this is not what you want, is it ?

Bye
Benjamin Lebsanft
Negative Zero
As a matter of fact, it is possible to use iRiver firmware in an equivalent Sonicblue product, but it requires some minor hex editing to pull it off. It's not as hard as it sounds...
Benjamin Lebsanft
can you give me a link ? Or perhaps an explanation ?

I signed the petition some time ago with the comment: Resistance is futile!
cool.gif

Regarding IRiver and Ogg: They have been working on this for God knows how long. There has been some problems which may still be unsolved and it has reach the point where I'm not sure that they will ever get it to work on my Rio Volt (with a ARM7).

But at least they are working on it and I think that shows the fact that OGG might have a bright future ahead. I certainly hopes so...

Thanks very much for the petition, Benjamin!

here is what i got from sonicblue:
