Full Version: Rear satellite "suspension" mount?

Hi guys/gals.

I just bought a set of klipsch promedia 4.1's (w/tornado 5.1 decoder) and I need a way to mount the rear satellites. The catch? I'm in a dorm room and I can't take up any floor space by using conventional mounting "stands". So I either will mount the speakers from the ceiling, or use an odd approach I saw once in a display stand for a Bose 5.1 system in a tweeter shop in natick, massachusettes.

It looked like this: (bow down to my mad mspaint skillz lol)

It attaches to the front wall and then extends back behind the listener and the two rear satellites are held at about ear-level. I wanted to keep the satellites at ear level since the tweeter horn in the klipsch satellites tends to project relatively horizontally planar.
I wanted to know if anyone knew where to buy one of these, what it is called, or how to fabricate it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

no idea... dorm rooms def arent the best... last year in mine i had my creative 5.1 system (i know it sucks... but its all i could afford as a poor college student) satellites mounted by just attaching them to the walls themselves.

EDIT: for the record i looked at your post.. seems something could be built like that...

if you do, tell me... it looks kinda cool!

I know the acoustics suck in dorm rooms...which is why I am also bringing a set of headphones. I wont have a wall behind me to mount the rear satellites on. Well, I mean, there is a wall there, but there will be beds and stuff in the way so I can't mount anything on them.

Should I just throw them on the ceiling? Where can I get some ceiling mounts?

edit: Yeah, in the tweeter shop, the display stand was really nice. It was really cool looking, really functional, and sounded really balanced and clean. I was thinking of taking some clamps and some old ski poles and seeing what would happen... lol

Ceiling mounts are going to be both much cheaper and easier to acquire than the system you'd like to fabricate. Here are a few mounts from a quick googling.

If you have access to reasonable metal working facilities, I'd guess it wouldn't be particularly difficult to get some light guage metal tubing and bend it a couple of times. Then you'd just have to fabricate and attach the tubes to the mounting point, which would likely require some welding.
It would be a PITA, but this kind of mounting does look pretty slick wink.gif
