Hi,
This is my first time to use MAD as the decoder of winamp.
I use MAD 0.14b2 as a input plugins.when I play a mp3,Winamp pops up an error to inform me that the output plugins can not be started.Does anyone can tell me what's going wrong and how to make MAD co-works with Winamp?
P.S.My winamp is version 2.78.My sound card is Sound Blas* Live!.

Maybe you should rename in_mp3.dll to in_mp3.dll.old (Or something like that), so that there's no conflict between the default decoder and mad.

Btw, you can get an ICL (= FAST) compile of in_mad at my page.

Regards;

Roberto.

Rename the old input plugin, make sure you set your output to 16bit in MAD, download the plugin pack for Winamp 2:

I installed WinAm 2.79 atop my old one to reassociate file types Sonique 2 alpha 2 had stolen. I got most of the files and downloads recommended in this thread, plus some linked to. I'm surprised waupdate is recommended since it hasn't been updated in some time. I put the optimized 116 kb in_mad.dll in WA plugins. But, I'm not certain I got this sequence of delta installs right. For the bestest WinAmp, I'd like to know what files should be installed. deleted, replaced.
BTW, I thought Sonique produces more hiss and has a grittier sound ...

I haven't had to rename anything, I've had good success following the instructions..

Install.

Go to the original input decoder, and in it's settings you will find a box that lists which file types it will operate on. ( a list of three suffixes)

Delete these, leaving the box empty. This effectively disables the original Winamp mp3 decoder. No need to rename or remove anything.

Go to the MAD decoder, and check the box in it's settings to enable it. (as well as checking for 16 bit and etc)

That 's it. (may need to close and open Winamp)

To reverse, uncheck the MAD enable box, and go to where you were in the Winamp decoder's settings, there is a button marked "Default" which puts the three default filetypes back that you formerly erased.

Poof... you're back with the original decoder..

Easy! biggrin.gif

I do this often... the only reason I don't use MAD consantly, is I don't get the file/artist info in the Winamp display or playlist, when I'm listening to streaming stations. I also don't get the auto updating website info that I normally get for some of these sites when I'm using the MAD decoder.

I still am not entirely sure this isn't me somehow, but I think it's a bug in MAD. Anyone have some insight?

From the MAD page:
Preliminary streaming support is implemented, but you may wish to leave the default decoder installed for more complete handling of play from URLs until full streaming support is available.

PP doesn't announce updates. wa2update gets updated very often, i would say almost weekly. Sometimes even daily, when bugs are found.

As WinAmp 2.79 was just released the update isn't realy necessary at this point in time. It certainly has nothing to do with the MAD problem.
Setting MAD output to 16 bit might help.

BTW. there is no real conflict between MAD and the Nullsoft MPEG decoder, it is just a matter which one is chosen (see in_mad.txt)

Very helpful advice and info. Clicking on the link to wa2update only presented the file with the same name I already had. Going to Peter's zips directory revealed it was updated 13 hours ago!

BTW: will there be MAD WinAMP plug-in version supporting id3v2 & fast readout of such?
And by "supporting" I don't mean "not crashing with" (this the actual versions do perfectly - ignore id3v2 and play) but "displaying artist name & track from id3v2" (may be without editing) ?

Ah, I vaugely remember something to that effect. Also think I emailed about it, and he was awaiting some info on that part of the structure of streaming. Been a while since I'd installed it...

I've never noticed any audio problems with streaming, just the title/author info and URL info bug...

Thanks to you all!It works now and a new question comes.
I found that MAD is only work in 16-bit mode (um...8-bit mode is also work.) but not in 24-bit nor in 32-bit mode.Does it an limitation of my sound card?As I mentioned,I use SoundBlaster Live! and it is a 24-bit card.
ANyway,thanks for all of u guy's kindness.biggrin.gif

What exactly makes you think that the SB live is a 24 bit-card? It's not. It's a 16 bit-card. In fact, it's not even a decent 16 bit-card. Also, the SB Audigy is not even a true 24 bit-card, although it claims to be one.

As you may have noticed, i learned my lesson with the SB Live (yes i had one), and i don't regret spending money on a better soundcard.
