I wanted to get the standard DVD player transmision via SPDIF (like hardware DVD players) of AC3 or DTS non pcm data (48 khz) included in DVDs.

My config: REVO (set in Digital mode) , WinXP SP1

I have tested (I donīt have objetive data recorded) many players (PowerDVD 4, WinDVD 5, NVDVD 2.55, ...).
I couldnīt test PowerDVD 5 cause there was a delay SPDIF bug. Patch build 0803 (8-28-03) fix this bug.

After test it, I think that PowerDVD 5 is the standard DVD player via SPDIF. I donīt see any diference between PowerDVD 5 build 0803 and expensive hardware DVD players (in AC3 or DTS).

PowerDVD 5 Trial (6.5 MB):

Tell your experience with PowerDVD 5 build 0803 with your sound card in SPDIF mode to confirm the standard.

Thanks.

I have a m-audio 24/96 and I have tested many filters too, ac3filter and the others.
It reveal that with my system, the nvdvd 2.55 filter is better than the others, especially more with a dvd of saint seiya (first episodes, quality not so good), there was a huge difference of volume. It seems that with the other movies, it is a little better. I used before windvd filter.

I don't understand. Do you mean that playback of AC3/DTS streams over SPDIF sound different on different programs (which is impossible I think)? Or do you mean that this build is the first in which it works properly?

In case of the latter, I'm sure there isn't a quality difference with expensive hardware players (well, those have better video image quality perhaps).

I mean SPDIF "non pcm" player, not "non pcm" to 6 channel decoding filter.

I mean two things: perfect SPDIF pass, and the first PowerDVD 5 build in which SPDIF works correcty. I couldnīt believe it too, but at least with my actual card itīs true. Many people note the difference.

I have a M-Audio Revolution 7.1, and, earlier I had an Audigy. Itīs the first time I feel like in a Theatre when AC3/DTS is playing. Like hardware players who follow the AC3/DTS SPDIF standard.

I donīt know if itīs an intentional "conspiracy with PC" by Dolby/DTS side(or Windows side), or simply that itīs very dificult to pass correctly non pcm data. I think only creators know this.

So, AC3 pass-through produced sound before, only it wasn't as good?

That's weird... I'd think that AC3 would either pass unhampered and perfectly or else wouldn't work...?!

@ Patsoe:

Thatīs weird, but, itīs true. One example is The Core Media Player 4, which can play AC3 movies and some AC3 files, even at 44 khz (RC4 version). But sound is very diferent than all DVD players.

Even more incredible:

If you play a DVD or AC3/DTS file with PowerDVD 5 build 0803, and, while itīs playing, you try to playback 44 khz files(example: windows sounds, or Foobar2000), sound changes to 44 khz, so DVDs sounds at lower speed, and ALL 44 khz AC3/DTS files are played correctly(instead overspeed). It only occurs with this program and build.

Im under the impression that NVdvd 2.55 has better sound quality than Powerdvd 5....i dont know why, but the sound looks more clear, with high volume and quality.

I have a Audigy + Creative inspire 4400 and Geforce 4 ti4200.

Windvd 5 is a real shit on my system tongue.gif
