color of song playing - NEEDS TO STAND OUT!
BACK button should go to last played song, even if not the playlist entry directly above (i.e. shuffle)
no volume toolbar except in prefs?
volume takes too long to audibly change. (lag)
select playlist entry. hold shift, press down several times. then pressing up doesnt unselect the entries like it should.
id3 tags, while nice and clear about variables, don't take into account the fact that id3 v1, 1.1, and 2 still make a difference. which does it use? also, it would be nice if you could highlight more than one track and click 'get info' to set id3 info, one by one. (one at a time would pop up, after each before it was closed)

You can make the current track stand out by using something like: $if(%_isplaying%,FF0000|FF0000,000000)
in your playlist formatting.
Hope that helps...

Reduce buffering or use soundcard's mixer.

It uses whatever you select (I suspect that in no case it will write ID3v2 tags).
It will write ID3v2 tags (and only ID3v2 tags) if you have the ID3v2 component installed, and configure standard input array to use it.

It writes id3 v1 and/or APE v2, in the prefs under input->standard input you can choose what tag formats it will write.
cool
thanks for the responses.
also one other suggestion:
what do you think of the idea of having a 'find' feature like "j" (jump) in winamp, where it finds the track you're looking for as you type it?

where do you mean? i tried lowering the buffering in prefs -> output -> wavout and directsound, no change.

There will always be a delay, and the delay corresponds to the buffering period. Try setting your buffers to 200 ms or less, if possible, and your volume control would respond almost instantaneously.
To check if you are using WaveOut, DirectSound or Kernel Streaming, look under Preferences > Output.
And yes, response delay is intended behaviour, though I forgot why.
Added edit: Soundcard mixer is most usually Windows' Volume Control.

There is a playlist search option, at menu 'Playlist' > 'Search...'. It is possible to assign a keyboard shortcut to it.

I belive the default keyboard shortcut is F3 accually.
Without sound harsh, before you go posting a bunch of errors and problems with foobar why dont you read the forums a little and learn how it works. The formatting strings are very flexable and foobar has no intention of intergrating with the soundcard's mixer, just open up volume control. These arnt bugs of any kind.
And in responce to your shuffing comment, yes I agree, the shuffling is foobar isnt the greatest, but I've heard something about a plugin... uhm... foo_history i think? It's supposed to change the way the back and next buttons work.

I'd actually like to add a small request about the playlist.
When moving multiple songs somewhere by holding CTRL-SHIFT, could it be changed so as to shift the top item to wherever you're clicking? Right now it will only do this if the top item is in focus, otherwise it'll position the songs so that the currently focused item is where you clicked. While this makes sense from a logical point of view, it's really annoying to try and move an album somewhere only to have to reposition it because you left the focus in the middle

There's also an "ID3v2" option if you have foo_id3v2 installed.

me too wants the selection to work more like in standart windows boxes... Ctrl+Shift+Click behavior is annoying... u can't select from song 1 to 10 and from 20 to 30 in 4 clicks, u need 3+10=
13 clicks, right? ugly.

Maybe you should start a new thread about your Ctrl-Shift-Control issue.
Foobar's Ctrl-Shift selection handling is actually better than Windows', although it's certainly different. It's made more for selecting with the keyboard. Use it just Shifted to select from the cursor's present location to the new one, Ctrled to select multiples, Ctrl-Shifted to move the selection. Windows isn't that efficient.

How I would to do just that:(1) Select track 1
(2) hold SHIFT -> select track 10 -> release SHIFT
(3) hold CTRL -> select track 20 -> release CTRL
(4) hold SHIFT -> select track 30.
Done!
Btw: I really like the way CTRL and SHIFT works, but an alternate solution wouldn't hurt as long as the current one stays as an option...
Edit: Removed a word that shouldn't have been there
but wouldnt it be nice if holding shift unselected, too?

I does that already...
But, I think it's pretty obvious that I don't understand what you mean, because it's right there and you couldn't possibly miss it.
Btw: Have you tried the description I gave? I think this works like a charm and even better and more intuitive (to me) than in explorer/windows. But this is personal taste and I guess it's hard to change your old habbits even if it might be for the better when it's only this one program.
A checkbox that changed to "the windows way" could solve the problem though.
Edit: Spelling
you tried what i said?

I use my arrow keys to skip and scan, so it wouldn't work for me anyway. Besides I don't use this functionality alot either, but when I do I like the way it currently works.
You can only hope your request will be implemented.

could replaygain/volume control DSP's effect volume change delay?
The volume change delay is precisely due to the fact that Volume Control in Foobar is a DSP, and is dependent on the length of output buffering.
what about a volume bar? are there any plans in the works?
I remember Peter saying that if he put the volumebar there, people would just start complaining about its lag.

Hehe, a media player without a volume control? No way, that would be so far out man!
I've gotten the hang of the fb2k GUI, and I don't need a volume bar. If I need a volume control bar, I'll just use foo_looks, and a look with a volume bar. There; All fixed

However a volume bar wouldn't hurt.
So what I'm saying is, no need, but hey, gadgets like something fancy as a volume bar, is always welcome.. As long as it is optional..
There is volume control and also the volume bar in the preferences. The point was, that he isn't going to add it to the main gui, because of the people that would begin whining about the lag.

unless the volume bar modifies the windows volume, and not just the fb2k volume.

ReplayGain support...
What of a menu-context item to specify a selection of tracks to be treated as an album? Much more convenient than continuous switching in prefs, and SHOULD be a standard entry.
<edit>
Or possibly even an automagical detection to use album-based RG based on a number of tracks in a row with identical album-based gains. This might be the more elegant solution. Mentioned in prefs of course, so people note this behaviour and can disable/enable based on personal preferences.
</edit>
I'm not sure what exactly a DSP is. Is there some advantage to using a volume control DSP over whatever way winamp does it?
sorry to sound ignorant, but the lag really does seem like an annoying thing. any player i can think of has that control on the main window, and i think it is essential.
they would probably complain about the lag, but a lagged one is better than one that is harder to access AND lagged, right?
what is so wrong with doing it the un-lagged way?
EDIT: winamp's volume bar doesnt change window's volume, does it? it doesn't seem like it does...
Doesn't if you use DirectSound, does if you use WaveOut, and WaveOut has an option to reset to original volume.
i just noticed that the lag DOES disappear if you lower the buffer time, however you must first restart the player.
what is the advantage of using waveout rather than direct sound? is it just a matter of whether it affects system volume or not? does one have better quality?
and also, what is the advantage of having, say, a 1000 buffer time over a 200 one?
