Finally a step forward on the war against the recording industry. Maybe they are starting to come around. Universal Music is cutting the prices on their new cds 30% according to a Reuters report. Not that it would keep us from making archival copies of music for personal use, e.g. mp3 players, but I don't have any problem paying $10 for a good disc. Hopefully this will be a start for some price wars.

Now if they would offer low cost replacements of damaged or scratched cd's....

I hope they do this in every country they have business on.
If not, I doubt it's going to do much good.
In my country, people have very low wages and that is their main reason to buy 1 dollar bootlegs. Now, I am not saying that they will happily switch to 10 dollar original CDs in every case (there is a lot of very sh*tty music here), but I think that it would definitely boost sales in the middle sections of society. Maybe like it was before.

As a sidenote, Sony Music has started selling OLD CDs (you know, hits from 4-5 years ago and backwards) for 2.50 dollars! And they have the exact same packaging. I have been filling some gaps in my collection. There's proof that on price drops, they surely can do better.

Maybe the are considering that the CD is not a new technology anymore and remove the "Technology tax"?

Like they do with artists : http://www.cosmik.com/aa-april02/mlm2.html
Look for " CD Reduction ". "Taxing" the artist's income.

Noting that they also force the artist to pay for the production of corrupted CDs sad.gif

2) They are now requiring you (artists) to pay $3.99 ea. "production costs" to produce what used to be known as "DAM CDs".

Anyway, that's a very good move from Universal, I applaud it warmly.
Even though Pascal Nègre it's french boss still has no clue about the real reasons of their failures, using the old wrong pre-recorded phrase (piracy is killing us, we must protect, users can use analog outpout to copy, etc...).
