Is it possible to playback audio DAT tapes in a PC tape drive? I have a Seagate DDS-2 (4GB) SCSI tape drive, connected to an Adaptec controller. Win2k Pro.

If it's possible, what software is needed to access and play the audio?

If I had to bet... I would bet 'no'. Actually, very few DDS drives support audio. For more information - and to know if you are fortunate - see

Thanks, actually I found that same link yesterday after Googling for DAT audio info. I may be fortunate, as it seems that at least SOME of the Seagate drives (including my Scorpion DDS-2 model) may be made to read audio data. I just need to yank it out of my server and check the model number to see if I'm lucky or not. I may not go as far as flashing the firmware though, because I'd hate to lose my backup drive, and DDS drives are still not cheap. Although I'd love to pick up a DDS-3 if I could find one at a decent price.

Interesting question !

After selling my TEAC R9 i still have a couple of very nice DATs that i would like to burn as CDs again, so i actually wouldnt want to listen to them on my PC in real time, just getting the data out and burn as CD would be fine for me. Is there something like a portable DAT drive using Ethernet or the like, something i could loan from a shop just for the one time transfer of my DATs ? Any recommendations ?
