Windows Media: Microsoft will Codec offen legen
München (smk) – Microsoft will die Spezifikationen der "Windows Media 9"-Kompression veröffentlichen. Amerikanischen Medien zufolge will es der weltgrößte Software-Hersteller damit anderen Anbietern möglich machen, eigener Produkte auf dieser Grundlage der Windows-Media-Technologie zu entwickeln.

Im Rahmen der Standardisierung hat Microsoft die technischen Details des Codecs der "Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers" (SMPTE) zur Prüfung übergeben. Die Gesellschaft arbeitet mit Herstellern sowie der Filmindustrie bei der Einführung neuer Video-Technologien zusammen.

Laut Microsoft-Manager Jonathan Usher will es sein Unternehmen Wettbewerbern einfacher möglich machen, Windows Media 9 zu nutzen, ohne separate Verträge mit Microsoft abschließen zu müssen. Nach der Genehmigung durch die SMPTE sollen von der Gesellschaft "kostengünstige und unkomplizierte" Lizenzen der Microsoft-Technologie erhältlich sein, erklärte Usher.

Not Bad not Bad....

First, i thought this is an english-forum. I'm german, but i suppose it would be more polite to post in english.

Second, IMHO this is pure PR bullshit. MS did spread similar rumors in the past, but..... they always became no more than rumors..... and alot of unjustified attention to microsoft.

Well I think there is a difference between "Microsoft will die Spezifikationen der "Windows Media 9"-Kompression veröffentlichen. " = "Microsoft wants to publish the Specification of Windows Media 9 Kompression" and Open Sourcing the whole Codec?

Well, this doesn't sound like the would give the source to the public.

hödyr: no, this has nothing to do with open-source. They're just giving the specs to SMPTE for review. Devs would then be allowed to optain licences from SMPTE (for a fee i suppose).

Agree with dev0 - they're just publishing enough specs to permit broadcast engineers to work with wmv streams. You'll still have to stick with MS.
