Hello

I just recorded some wav files from a cassette to the pc using foobar+recorder through line-in.

The files sound a bit drowned (not enough sharpness or treble) Is there anyway to increase the treble or make the files sound a little sharper???

[EDIT 1 - Whats the best way to make these wav files to mono mp3 files?]

[EDIT 2 - Whats the best way to make existing mp3 stereo files to mono mp3 files?]

You can use a audio editor for add effects and edit wav files. Yiu can use Soundforge, Cool Edit, Goldwave or Nero Wave Editor.

Just use lame to make mp3 files in mono or use the mp3 codec with the audio editor (for example: nero wave editor use FhG).

You can to do this with lame (convert mp3 file to wav and encode as mono).

Is it not possible to do this without re-encoding ???

[EDIT 1 - and how do you remove clicks and pops from the wav file. After removing the hiss with Audacity, the clicks and pops become more noticable sad.gif

I downloaded GoldWave, but cant figure out how to sharpen the sound ???]

Probably not, I guess it could be theoretically done if it was encoded using full stereo, but I don't know of any software that can do that.

EDIT: What I mean is that it could be theoretically possible to simply discard one of the channels if the encoding was done in full stereo, but I am not 100% certain of this though... Unless the file come from some p2p-nw, it is quite likely to be joint stereo, and then there is no chance at all.

There is a click/pop removal feature in GoldWave you can try. For removing clicks/pops from vinyl I have been using Waverepair & Groovemechanic, which are not free but fairly cheap, and I have been very happy with the results. However, you will have to spend much more time tuning settings, than with Goldwave.

You want to use some of the equalizers that are available under Effects -> Filters -> Equalizer or Parametric EQ. I doubt you will get any good results, without spending a lot of time tuning however... And lots of time are no guarantuee either...

In CoolEdit you can select one channel only(from stereo wav etc) and them save it as a mono mp3.
mp3 stereo -> mp3 mono without a re-encoding: and don't know how. Sorry.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, realize that this is very dependent on what the source material was. If your cassette was mono material to begin with that was made into two channels by recording with foobar, then there's no problem.

If, on the other hand, they're old recordings of the Beatles, when they we're on Capitol records, doing the above will convert your material either into a Karoke or an a cappella performance, depending on whether you grab the left or right channel.

Extreme examples mind you, but you get my point! tongue.gif

Edit: I wonder how many folks here are old enough to know what I'm talking about. wink.gif

You can always use 'Convert sample type' function of Audition/CEP
or just 'Mix Paste' one channel into another, then save them.
