If I use the --alt preset standard option, will this be ok with Winamp 2.91? Does Winamp have problems displaying the correct times for VBR files? Also, how do Ipods fare with VBR and time display?

They both handle things perfectly, IIRC

No trouble here with the latest Lame .dll and the iPod or Winamp. However I did just experience some trouble along similar lines, I tried lamedropXPd 1.3.2 (using 3.90.3) transcoding to --alt-preset- fast extreme from ogg -q5 files, and here is an interesting phenom: Foobar2000, winamp, and windows all report the mp3 bitrate as 32kpbs, although the dynamic bitrate in winamp updates with expected '--a-p fe' bitrates while playing. I haven't tried foobar''s dynamic bitrate tagz variable yet, as I justread about it today.
