Full Version: Is my CD-R drive using a pseudonym?

While trying to fix a problem with EAC (jury's still out on that) I found that my CD-R is not what it seems. There's no way to change my DMA settings like everyone suggested. I found some pictures online of my model (CyberDrv CW078D) and they didn't look anything like my drive. And finally I tried to update the firmware (no way to see what version I have either) and got an error saying "model name mismatch". This is an off-the-shelf Compaq Presario with the drive pre-installed/configured and running Win XP Home. Could Device Manager be telling me I have a drive that is not actually the one I have? I'm still interested in updating the firmware, too, if anyone has any advice. headbang.gif

Run a test with Feurio and see if it reports it as being the same model.

Cyberdrive is not a manufacturer and use diff sources for their drives.
Your burner may be from LG, Samsung, Aopen-Ricoh, Acer/Benq, etc...
I didnt mention LiteOn, because they support DMA.

I'd say that CyberDrive makes their own drives, and the 078D model is probably based on a Mediatek chipset, because it's not able to run capacity tests:

Other models with OAK and Mediatek chipsets:

I remember there were problems updating firmware from this thread, and there were a couple of Cyberdrive webs with different versions of firmwares. The same mismatch error:

You drive is most probably a Cyberdrive. It would be the 1st time I see that the ID-string doesn't coincide with drive.

Don't forget to add the latest 1.66.5 driver update if you want to try it with Feurio, which, by the way, is the best program to diagnose problems with your drive (if the drive is supported).

Hey minix, You're right.
Actually I made a confusion between "Cyberdrive"and another brand:
"Cendyne" which actually sells rebagged drives from different
manufacturers including LiteOn, etc...

I suspected that... I made the same error some time ago tongue.gif

Minix - thanks for the good info. OK, I have downloaded Feurio (which I already like better than EAC) and the new driver updates, but am having a new problem. Feurio sees the same model ID for my drive and is telling me that I have multiple inconsistent versions of ASPI installed. I have tried reinstalling the Adaptec ASPI and nothing changes. The ASPI check program also shows multiple versions and the "ASPI is working correctly" line is grayed out. How do I "uninstall" the old or inconsistent versions? Just deleting the .dll files doesn't seem to work - Feurio still shows the ASPI file after system analysis, but just doesn't show any details.
Also, I tried again to upgrade my firmware again from CyberDrive's site (tried two different version numbers) and got "model name mismatch" both times. There has to be a way to do this - any advice? That thread you pointed me towards just said CyberDrive never responded to an inquiry about this problem.

Off topic and FWIW, a pseudonym is a fictitious name used by an author to conceal his/her real name, such as Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman.

Thanks, but I'm aware of that. I am guite definitely worried that my drive is using some name for itself that conceals it's true identity. As for the fictitious qualification, obviously a CyberDrv CW078D is not a fictitious model, but then pseudonyms are in a gray zone, aren't they? Anyone can make one up, but once a work is published under that name it now "exists" and is really no longer fictitious.

I believe what you are talking about is Original Electronic Manufacturer, or OEM. A company like Sony, for instance, does not manufacture its own lower end products. It purchases them from other companies such as Hitachi and has them badged and sells them as Sony products. It happens all the time and that is what you have likely come across. However, if you wish to call it a pseudonym, then go for it. wacko.gif

You're using WinXP, so forget about ASPI.
Go to:
Feurio CD-Manager -> Program Parameters -> Program Parameters
Feurio CD-Writer -> Program Parameters -> Access mode
and select the "DeviceIoControl" option.

This is the native WinNT/2K/XP interface for accessing drives (AKA STPI).
This way you avoid accessing the drives via ASPI layer.

Anyway, you have to fix your ASPI drivers in order to use other programs correctly.
I don't how to uninstall the ASPI layer. I can only recommend you to only install ASPI 4.60 version only. ASPI 4.7x is buggy and doesn't work with a lot of programs.

I don't have the slightest idea why you can't update the firmware.
Usually, it's good to have DMA disabled when doing this operation.

Look for ASPI dlls in all your hard drive. There can be some in many folders.
