A few days after they released a new update to Nero 6, Ahead has just released Nero 5.5.10.54:

I guess the problem with the overburn feature has something to do with this release because Nero 5.5.10.50 was supposed to be the very last of the 5.5 series.

Are you seious when you say this is the last?

I got a stupid question, does it have the same Nero 6 AAC encoder?

It wasnt bugfixed/improved for this version either

Weird, i couldn't install it on a virgin XP install ("No previous Nero version could be found" or something). But it installed fine from nero551050.exe, and then i could use nero551054.exe to update it. Now... why can't one do a normal install with the new version anymore? Is this a 'political' decision or an accident?

Another weird thing:

nero551054.exe 06.10.2003 13.676.611 Bytes
nero551054.exe 10.10.2003 13.671.289 Bytes

Both from ftp4.nero.com. The file was silently updated. Why?
