Full Version: Help me to understand OGG

Maybe I missed something but here is some quite fool questions about OGG:

What does oggenc2 (2.x (libvorbis 1.0.1)) means ? Is it the new generation of OGG
or something ?

Previous version of OggDropXPd (1.7.2) worked fine for me. v1.7.4 (both original and GT) doesn't allow me to set fractal values, -q 6.33 for example. Only whole numbers. Should I use it ?

Simple 1.7.4 version generates files with ogg tag: libVorbis I 20030909
but GT one generates tag: libVorbis I 20020717. Is it important ?

Thank you in advance.

oggenc version 2 means a new version of oggenc. I think its got new features to the encoder functionality rather than the quality of the audio it produces. It is based on libvorbis 1.0.1 which contains a few bug fixes. The vendor tag for 1.0.1 is Xiph.org libVorbis I 20030909.

GT3b1 is a tuned version of the first release of ogg vorbis (1.0) hence its based on the original library and its tag is libVorbis I 20020717.

If you are wondering which one to use then, I think GT3b1, while it uses an older library, will still sound better than vorbis 1.0.1 at quality levels 5 and above. Anything below 5, vorbis 1.0.1 will be the better choice.

I'm not certain of this of course since the new 1.0.1 of Vorbis fixes some quality problems which may or may not affect high bitrates. Maybe someone more familiar with the problems with the original Vorbis and how they've been fixed in the current version can enlighten us.

Oh, thank you ! How about "strange" behavior of 1.7.4 XPd ? Is it real bug or my
fault ?

Your statement is correct. Garf's tunings affect high bitrate modes. The bug fixes in 1.0.1 affect low bitrate modes.

It would be best to wait for the author of OggDropXPd (John33) to answer that one. smile.gif

Along the same lines, John33, is it possible to upload a P4 optimized version of libVorbis.dll to rarewares (both Garfs and 1.0.1)? I am still using besweet to encode a lot of audio, the P4 version really saves on time.

Also, are you planning on updating speexdrop to the current "experimental" release (1.0.2)? If you were thinking of adding a feature, I would love to be able to output speex files with a wave header (so it could easily be read by windows using the ACM playback filter). Either way, I love your software, and still use it everyday!

Thanks,

Your other questions have already been answered.

V1.7.4 allows me to select any quality setting. I am surprised you have a problem. Does it not allow you to set the quality value with both the slider and by entering the value directly in the edit box?

Is the final relaese of 1.01 ready ? I thought that corrections, found in CVS, were not totally finished. Am I wrong ? Is 1.01 the new official encoder, available for everybody, at xiph.org ?

As far as I can tell, the corrections for 1.0.1 are finished. They're just working on packaging up some Win32 binaries, some .RPMs, and maybe a few other details like that before releasing it at xiph.org .

Thank you smile.gif
Just need to wait few time, now.

The "strange" behaviour is in following:
I click the slider and while moving it, the bitrate is changing in free way but when
I release the mouse both slider and bitrate indicator jump to closest whole value.
Editing the value in the edit box has no effect. Only way I find is to directly edit
oggdropXPd.ini file ...

Weird! blink.gif I have never seen this problem before. Can you tell me what your system is, OS, etc.?
Skymmer
I'm using Windows ME v4.90.3000 (Russian).
Few hours ago I totally re-installed it and still no effect ...
Also I dig the import table of 1.7.4 version and here is the versions of dll used
by 1.7.4 on my system (if it's important):

KERNEL32.dll = 4.90.0.3000
GDI32.dll = 4.90.0.3000
SHELL32.dll = 5.50.4134.100
USER32.dll = 4.90.0.3000
WINMM32.dll = 4.90.0.3000

I had never seen this problem either, until yesterday. I downloaded OggdropXpd (GT) from Rarewares on a friends' computer, and it had exactly the same problem: only whole values are accepted.
His OS is Windows XP, running on a P4.

Hmmm, I'll look at this to see if I can see anything although that code hasn't changed in a very long time so I'm not too hopeful!! unsure.gif

@john33:
So it's been a while and with the very latest 1.0.1 compile of oggdrop I'm having that strange no-fractional-values-bug too. I didn't have problems with pre 1.0.1 compiles...

Have you come up with any ideas for this yet? rolleyes.gif

Nothing that sticks out like a sore thumb!! wink.gif However, I've tried a small change and should be grateful if someone could tell me if it makes any difference.http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jfe1205/testXPd.ZIP

Thanx for helping, John but still no luck. Only whole values :'(
