Full Version: 0.7.1 freeze when playing mp3

Hi,

Ok, this bug-report probably isn't of any use, but i thought maybe i should post it anyways.

I was playing a playlist with only mp3s. The playlist repeated i think 5-6 times with no problems. I had fb2k minimized to the systray.

Then suddenly, playback stopped in the middle of a song(i was writing another posting at that time, so i didn't send any commands to fb2k at that time). I clicked the systray icon to see whats up, but nothing happend(the systray icon did display the current track info, but i couldn't right- or left-click it.

I did wait maybe 3mins to see if fb2k would recover, but with no luck. I then terminated fb2k using the taskman(it showed zero cpu-utilization).

No errorlog was written and no error-dialog-boxes appeared.

using directsound v2, windows 2000 pro SP3, terratec xfire 1024
DSP-chain: gap-killer -> convert st to 4ch -> move st to rear ch -> foo_wider -> crossfade

3rd-party-plugins: foo_osd v1.26

I could upload the song played when the freeze happened, but as i mentioned already, the same song played a dozen times in the past without any error.

Oh dear, my foobar's done the same, but with 100% cpu usage. I was also messing with foo_osd though. Isnt there some way you can force a crash dump or something ?

its still playing like normal though, just the gui is frozen, playback/playlist bits seem to be still going as its advancing through tracks

too late, im ending it coz its taking 300mb vm

i got this though

thats the main thread right ? maybe it was a component? it was 3 secs into song, i was messing with foo_osd config which was still displayed..

Lyx: did you have 100% cpu usage? ok saw you said no.. i wonder if they're related, sorry for posting in your thread otherwise..

edit: i can reproduce it by messing with foo_osd, so posted in that thread.

nope, i'm absolutely sure that there was 0% cpu-usage in the taskman when i terminated the process. Also, fb2k was sitting minimized in the systray and i didn't touch it for a while. Additionally, it was in the middle of a song, so my OSD sleeping(not visible).

I suppose my freeze and yours are different ones(still, it could be related to foo_osd, since i also seem to have been the only one who had freeze-problems during the 0.7.1 betas - and i'm one of the few people who use foo_osd).

Ok, this could probably all be a coincidence, but 0.7.1beta's and 0.7.1final do seem a bit unstable to me. I hardly never ever had crash/freeze problems with foobar in the past, until the arival of 0.7.1betas. And i did use foo_osd in the past with no crashes happening.

Also, i immediatelly did use directsound v2 as soon as the 0.7.1betas appeared. So, i could be all wrong, but i suspect the following culprits for fb2k 0.7.1's unstable behaviour:

- directsound v2 (peter did mention that it's quite new and experimental and has bugs)
- changes to the core (may be related to the following... peter did mention at least one core-bug fixed which was triggered by foo_osd)
- a bug in foo_osd which appeared somewhere between versions 1.23-1.25
- my machine/os has magically become fb2k-unfriendly in the previous weeks, either by faults made by myself, or murphy's law.

EDIT: hey! thinking about it, the freeze you describe is probably the same one, i reported in this thread(see 2nd post)
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....howtopic=13901&

the threads got merged to the above one, because peter thought it maybe a bug in mo3-playback - but after reading your above freeze-report, this does instead seem to be related to foo_osd and NOT mo3.

ok, summary:

there are 2 different freezes:
- the one i reported in the original posting at the top of the page
- high-cpu-freeze triggered by foo_osd-preferences

Hmm, I'm interested in knowing too, although I probably have not much use for it.

system internals process explorer

they have a fair bit of useful stuff.

Oi, and I even have that utility installed.... shows how often I use it.

v7.0... Time to upgrade. (Version installed: 5.25)

Thanks. :B

P.S.: Bug with foo_osd has been fixed.
