I'm a Winamp'er myself. Winamp 5.0 beta decodes Vorbis natively (no plug-in), encodes Vorbis natively, but has no auto-tagging (that I've ever found).
But I only use Winamp as a player and playlist manager. I encode with Speek's Oggifier, Vorbis 1.01 at -q 5, and I use Case's Tag to manually add my tags rather than have to fix the spelling and formatting of downloaded tag info.
I'm an ultra-neurotic control freak, though. To each tool, a certain purpose. Only a couple of tools have more than one purpose for me. (This is just as much about what I'm used to using as it is about product effectiveness, I'll admit.)
Extraction: Exact Audio Copy ---> Gain Adjustment: WaveGain ---> Encoding: Oggifier, Vorbis 1.01 ---> Initial Tagging: Tag.exe ---> Tag Modification: Tag&Rename --->
Playback: Winamp --->
Playlist Creation/Management: Winamp ---> Visualizations (for events): MilkDrop (via Winamp) ---> DMS Management: PhatNoise Music Manager ---> Transcoding for Portables: dBpowerAMP Music Converter ---> Tag Browsing: dBpowerAMP Music Converter
I do use Quintessential Player and foobar2000 occasionally, and they're great also!
