What software is the best player for Ogg Vobis?Winamp?Foobar2000?Or any else?

In my opinion,QCD Player may be the best!MY reason as follow:

1.The new 4.X version can decode Ogg files directly, plugin is no need!

2.After download a Ogg Vorbis Encoder Plugin,QCD Player can make Ogg files from CD directly. The operation is simple and convenient!

3.The CDDB Querying fuction with great efficiency can automaticly tag Ogg files! It is very usefly!

Of course, you may have different mind.So let's discuss the easy topic!

Discussing and comparing players is never "easy" here, man :B

I'm a Winamp'er myself. Winamp 5.0 beta decodes Vorbis natively (no plug-in), encodes Vorbis natively, but has no auto-tagging (that I've ever found).

But I only use Winamp as a player and playlist manager. I encode with Speek's Oggifier, Vorbis 1.01 at -q 5, and I use Case's Tag to manually add my tags rather than have to fix the spelling and formatting of downloaded tag info. wink.gif

I'm an ultra-neurotic control freak, though. To each tool, a certain purpose. Only a couple of tools have more than one purpose for me. (This is just as much about what I'm used to using as it is about product effectiveness, I'll admit.)

Extraction: Exact Audio Copy ---> Gain Adjustment: WaveGain ---> Encoding: Oggifier, Vorbis 1.01 ---> Initial Tagging: Tag.exe ---> Tag Modification: Tag&Rename ---> Playback: Winamp ---> Playlist Creation/Management: Winamp ---> Visualizations (for events): MilkDrop (via Winamp) ---> DMS Management: PhatNoise Music Manager ---> Transcoding for Portables: dBpowerAMP Music Converter ---> Tag Browsing: dBpowerAMP Music Converter

I do use Quintessential Player and foobar2000 occasionally, and they're great also!

To address your comments:

1. Foobar2000 can also decode Vorbis directly, no plugin needed.

2. This (and the next comment) address creating the files, not playing them. At any rate, most people here are concerned with quality when it comes to ripping. Programs like EAC and CDex offer advanced features which I have not seen in QCD Player.

3. EAC and CDex both make use of freedb. Using an efficient filenaming scheme and foobar2000's masstagger makes tagging files a very simple task.

You can do all that with Foobar2000.

All in a nice small installer and with less resources used during playback. And thats that. Also, more is in store for foobar2000. At version 0.7.1 it can do all that stuff and development is still racing ahead. By 1.0 it should be pretty much all you need and more.

Anybody smart enough to listen to high quality digital audio can use foobar2000.

Thou hast been foo'ed. tongue.gif

foo'ed v. (past-tense) The act of correcting a person who may doubt the benefits and ease-of-use of foobar2000. Rather than by only one person, this is generally carried out by a pack of rabid foobar2000 users, also known as "foo-fans".

Oh come on, we have to fight off the rabid QCD lovers too you know tongue.gif

But really, there is no absolute best player for everybody. People have individual tastes. I just happen to be a foobar zealot cuz being a former winamp devotee. Foobar just had so many functional advantages over winamp that I just had to switch. QCD is ok, but I'm not really into skinning and big musicmatch type players.

IMHO, I've been a winamp user for a while and I've had no problems (other than the tagging bug in the 1.3a of the vorbis plugin) with vorbis.

If you mean 'best' as in best quality, there is probably little to no difference between the players.

Is this a myth that is building up? If you had ripped a CD to lossless, or to ogg, how is the sound any higher quality - please explain this magical change to me, or are we talking about other things here?

Another vote for foobar2000. Why have 4, 5, or even 6 different programs when foobar2000 can do the lot biggrin.gif

Not a regular user yet, but I have downloaded the latest fb2k release, so I'm working on "consolidation of tasks" now as a matter of fact. I have to admit I've been satified with all aspects of Winamp except the product support. With the seemingly better alternative of foobar2000, there's nothing I'd like more than to run away from the llama as fast as I can! smile.gif

If you go with Foobar2000, be sure to check out the sticky in the Foobar 2000 general forums. Specifically, the fb2k formatting strings. All I have to say is that upNorth and billcow are geniuses for coming up with a brilliant formatting scheme that makes Foobar2000's interface much nicer.

It requires that your files are properly tagged though, but with all the plugins, proper tagging is blindingly easy in fb2k.
