Full Version: Storing ID tags

I just started using foobar but it's tag policies are still a bit unclear to me.
I know foobar only has native ID3v1 support and you have to install the ID3v2 plugin to get support for those tags. I also understand the objections against the use of ID3v2 (by some people).

What I don't understand is why the ID3v1 tag gets cleared if I alter the ID3v2 tags. After all, I seem to recall that some players don't have native support for ID3v2 tags ;-)
Is it possible to store both ID3v1 and ID3v2 information if the ID3v2 tags gets altered? Or atleast keep the ID3v1 info?

Quite a few posts mention APEv2 tags, what are those? Why are these tags better than ID3v2? The only reason why I use ID3v2 tags is because it's support of longer tag information. Is this possible using the APE tags?
Do "most" players support APE tags? Is it easy to switch to APE tags in loads of files without having to do it manually?
...and finally: What combination do you recommend me to use ID3v1/APEv2, ID3v2/APEv2 or just APEv2?

The player removes all supported tag formats from the file before writing the chosen tag format.

Maybe what you are looking for is a ID3v2 + ID3v1 mode.

In the preferences in the Standard Inputs section I don't have an option like that, the only once listed are:

- APEv2 tags only
- APEv2 and ID3v1
- ID3v1 tags only
- ID3v2

Yes, I know. I was suggesting an unimplemented mode that you may want.

Can I consider it "Added to Wish list" now or do you suggest me creating it myself?
What do you, or other people, think of adding this option?

I'd have to recommend using either ape2, id3v1 or a combination of the two. The differences between id3v2 and ape2 is huge, where an id3v2 tagging will take a very long time ape2 will be almost instantaneous.

Can you explain to me what this APEv2 exactly is?
I found loads of sites mentioning it and I beleave it comes from Monkey's Audio but I can't find a good description of it.
Am I correct it's a tag you can add to differenent audio files e.g. mp3 and ogg?
Can it handle long names like ID3v2?
Why is it better than using ID3v2?

It is a tagging system (like id3v1/2) designed by Frank Klemm and commonly used with the following formats: MPC, APE, WavPack, MP3 and raw AAC streams. It's more flexible than ID3V2 and supports long names. It shouldn't be used on formats, which provide their own powerful tagging system like Vorbis, FLAC or MP4.

Any chance of you ever implimenting that?

The standard input array needs to be changed.

-> when i scan & replaygain some files, id3v1 is wiped, i suppose that it is the same problem wich is discussed on this thead

- because for some portable mp3 players software (ephpod) , id3v2 seems to be the only solution to get long filenames...
- and i also want to keep compatibility of id3v1 for some people

and it means that it will likely be difficult/long ?

Check preferences|input|standard inputs and see if "APEv2 only" is selected. Change it to APEv2 and ID3v1 to keep the ID3v1 tags.

thanx, i think i'd need more id3v2 than v1... so i guess i'll have to wait a little, no problem ;^)
