First some info: I'm using the latest Foobar 2000 v0.7.1 (lite), WinXP Pro w/SP1, nForce2 motherboard with onboard audio enabled, and all the latest drivers.

Ok Foobar was working just fine until I installed the game Max Payne 2. That's when I noticed that i couldn't get Foobar to play any of my mp3s anymore, nor any other audio files. The files show up in the playlist but they just don't play--the track counter never starts.

I've rebooted and reinstalled Foobar, that didn't work.

Also, I installed Winamp, that didn't work either! However, Windows Media Player works just fine, and so does my previous Foobar, v0.56b (if you'll remember this version doesn't have an installer, this is one reason why i liked Foobar so much).

So do you think the installation or audio configuration of Max Payne 2 is preventing Foobar and Winamp from working somehow? I don't want to have to uninstall Max Payne 2 and reinstall it again (because that probably wouldn't help), and i don't want to have to keep using Foobar v0.56b.

Check mixer settings?

Can u be more specific please? Are u referring to the Windows volume mixer? That looks fine.

I had a similar problem a bit ago, Winamp and Foobar2k didn't work. A quick sound driver reinstall fixed the problem.

I'll try that, thanks.

1) What output are you using? Did you try the other output modes?
2) Did Max Payne 2 update your DirectX?

I installed Max Payne 2 on WinXP SP1 and Foobar2000 works fine here.

I'm using the waveOut. I tried DirectSound, that didn't work either. What's null Output? I tried it and i could see the track playing but i couldn't hear anything.

And I'm using the latest DirectX (v9.0b). However, i noticed that when i use its troubleshooting tool (dxdiag) to test my sound output, i can't hear anything. It gave me the following error:
DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software)

I'm going to check google and see if i can find anything.

Windows volume control. It is accessible from either the system tray (speaker icon, if you have it enabled) or the control panel. (Sounds and Audio Device Properties, Volume tab, Advanced...)

Yeah Windows volume control looks fine.

I sent a email to the game's technical support people. I'll see what they can do.
