I've been trying to figure out a way for me to play songs from my computer and hear them at other computers around campus. While iTunes can do this, iTunes is annoying and doesn't work natively with Nero's AAC/MP4 tracks. I tried setting up a simple ftp server and streaming the tracks from there, but Foobar2k (using v0.7.1) doesn't like to stream from an ftp (or at least it didn't like mine). Do you have any solutions? I'd like to take advantage of the bandwidth and simply play my .flac songs, but I'm ok with playing either my AAC/MP4 or MP3's instead. Thanks!

Interesting you bring this up on the same day I read about Students develop file-swap alternative.
They had a budget for student projects and it's not an answer to your question. unsure.gif

Set up a HTTP server, then give URL's to foobar2000.

I don't know if that's too simple or I am overlooking something; but would creating an SMB share not be totally sufficient for this purpose?

Wouldn't creating an SMB share only work within one domain? I've heard you could make it span mulitple domains, but that it's a royal pain to do so. I've never tried it, but I don't know how to go about doing it.

Good point. Well it depens if he's working within a workgroup or a domain. If he's working in a domain, he has to logon to the domain in order to reach his share.

I'd go for Andromeda: Set up a web server and add php support. It has support for iis/asp as well, but I haven't tried it with asp.

In Andromeda, you will have support for all possible streaming audio formats, as well as video formats.

The only thing you will need is a player of your choice, as long as it supports streaming (as for exampel Foobar2000, Winamp and XMMS).

Cheers

Dude! Just use QCD. There is a plugin for doing exactly what you want to do:

QCD Browseamp (under General Plugins):
"QCD BrowseAmp contains a small web server and provides a free customizable web interface to control your QCD via LAN."

It worked in an older version IIRC... But now it does not. Anyway HTTP server will do.

Why not use ShoutCAST or something similar? I've used it at home a couple of times and it works great.

Thanks for the advice. I've set up an Apache web server and I'm now at another computer listening to my .flac songs. I do have a question, though. Is there any way that the tags could be read upon playback? I think it would be neat to be able to see the actual file tags while playing. I thought that making Nero AAC/MP4's with the "Hint" option selected (Nero's encoder options say the "hint" option helps with streaming), but the encoder crashes.

Because shoutcast doesn't let you control what songs you listen to.

I could do this, but I would have to set up my computer as part of the school's network, and I'd rather not have to log into my own computer as though it were a network computer and have it accessible at mycomputer.myschool.edu.

It looks like it could be a good program, but I'm not a big fan of paying $35 for it dry.gif.

I think you misunderstood my question (or I'm misunderstanding the purpose of this program from the website). I wanted to stream the music from my dorm computer to another computer on the campus, not to control the playback on my dorm computer.

J. River Media Center has a component called Media Server. MC on one machine can play files from MC's library on another by using it.
