Robyfly
Hi,
I'm posting just to thank Speek, Case and all people who made this simple and powerful little program for ape-tagging mpcs.
One click and a lot of files are ready.
I tried before with other apps but i think now this is the simple and fastest way to do it.

Best Regards

Thank you for your comments! It's good to know that people are happy with the program.

Yeah, thanx Robyfly. Good to hear that all the blood, sweat and tears weren't for nothing biggrin.gif

In the "old days" (when I was still using mp3  ) I used to tag my files with id3v1.x. A lot of times I couldn't fit the whole title in the field. I hated those chopped off names in Winamp, too. I never liked the concept of id3v2; I didn't need all that info when all I wanted was artist and title (perhaps album or comments; I also didn't like that bulky id3 window in Winamp). Since then I have ditched tagging my files and only went by file name. Now, I'm getting more and more excited to use those APE tags! They seem to offer everything I want in a flexible fashion! When having some lone files (say from an album where only 2 songs were good) I can pop them into my "singles" directory but still keep the info about where the file originated from. I'm looking forward to using your software to get those files tagged! Thank you!

I concur, Tag has been a life-saver, I just wish the option to leave the date alone was added before I foolishly modified my entire collection smile.gif

One thing I would like to see Tag do (or the frontend, whichever needs to handle it) is to have two separate naming schemes. Well, what I'd like to achieve is intelligent support for directory names.

To explain my meaning... my file naming generally goes as such:

Drive:Non-specific GenreArtist - Album TitleArtist - Track Title.mpc

On self-titled albums as well as collections the naming is:

Drive:Non-specific GenreAlbum TitleArtist - Track Title.mpc

Using the scheme XA - LA - T works fine for all of the first kind, but the other tags get messed up. Vice versa is true if I use XLA - T; the first case tags end up with the title using the full directory name.

It's a lot of manual work to go through my collection (900+ CD's) on a genre by genre basis and select only the folders for the relevant naming convention. The problem is compounded since I've given copies of the majority of my collection to family members and am trying to move them over to APE tags too.

Hope the suggestion makes sense.

Thanks for all the hard work and dedication to this project.

I can modify the filename reading to test multiple schemes and automatically select best mode. But I don't know when I have time to make this modification as I have some other projects under work now too. Hopefully I can make that soon.

Great frontend! Took me a heck of a while to figure out what the heck I was doing wrong, but after I did it works great for me. A simple feature request: would it be possible to change the "add files" dialog to allow us to simply select a directory, and the frontend automatically include all subdirectories and the files in those subdirectories? That would make it soooo easy to simply select, say, D:Music, and have the entire darn thing done in one step. Not sure how difficult that would be to do, but it'd be a fantastic feature to incorporate.

I've simply done this by doing a search on a directory like d:Music in your example and leaving the search parameters blank in windows. This will return a list of all the files in all subdirectories which you can select and drag into Tag Frontend.

It's not quite as simple as having the functionality built in (I think it'd be a nice addition too), but it's just as effective.

Thanks for your interest in adding the feature I suggested. Whenever you've got time in your busy schedule it'd be greatly appreciated. I know I'd have a rough time fitting it all into my schedule.

Okay, new version of Tag uploaded. Option --recursive applies all commands specified in every subdirectory. Frontend does not include support for this yet but I'm sure Speek will add support soon. Download Tag here: http://www.saunalahti.fi/~cse/Tag.zip

Okay, had some free time to grant wishes...
Tag 1.29 has been uploaded. I fixed a bug with Lyrics tag reading and made automatic scheme selector. I included most popular naming schemes in config already and users are free to add there their own.
I tested it quite thoroughly so it should be intelligent enough not to screw anything up.
Frontend is not updated to support it yet, so you need to type "--autoscheme" in other options field.
Enjoy!

Update 2:
The file is in the standard place now:

I'm working on the new options, but I can't keep up with Case wink.gif

There was a serious bug with Tag's APE 2.0 writing routines. Tagged files caused Winamp to crash. Fixed version is uploaded.

I added the new options to the frontend. Get it here: http://home.wanadoo.nl/~w.speek/tag.htm
