Thought I'd start a thread on the head-fi forum, as they started one over there on HA... biggrin.gif It remains to be seen if we can discuss things in a civil way without flaming or bashing -- moderators, if you don't think so then please close the thread.

Anyway, I post and participate there purely for entertainment. As much pseudoscience and nonsense that gets propagated, I find some good stuff as well. In particular, anyone interested in getting into DIY audio hardware might find the forum there to be a good starting point. Building electronic stuff can be a blast, in my opinion -- haven't done it for years, but have been thinking about it...

The headphones forum is also nice for comparing different headphones and learning which sound best for specific purposes (or shall I say, groping in the dark for clues)... and of course the general silliness and light talk in the "member's lounge" and political talk in "take it outside."

I think it's a fun board, and usually to be taken with a grain of salt. I've been able to keep the latter in mind, and enjoy posting there a great deal. Since joining I've gotten two excellent pair of headphones (Sennheiser HD-580 and HD-600) and a decent amp to drive them with, and learned that the "V" curve EQ (boosted bass + treble and recessed midrange) is not high fidelity. Perhaps a few people have been educated (thanks to my gabbing) on the fact that soundcards can make an excellent source, and occasionally I'll drop a mild challenge to the whole silly cable thing.

Umm.. so you are probably referring to this thread:

I'm not sure what's the point of analyzing head-fi.org over here. What can be said anyway.. It's a decent place and there's lots of interesting read especially if you are going to buy new headphones, and sometimes offers only for members. smile.gif

That's really sad. (this? is sadder, but probably irrelevant).

HA "vs" Head-Fi" looks like the usual art/science argument. Well, I'm totally a scientist, but love music and audio. The "sound" of most recorded music from previous generations is due to the audio technology, but the way that technology is used is artistic. (e.g. Phil Spector's "wall of sound"). And the beauty of Mozart is there live or recorded.

Anyway: there was one useful thing in that debate: fewtch bitching about the organisation of HA. You were wrong for bitching about it fewtch, because it would take hundreds of person-hours (months?) to do what you suggest. To moan because people haven't done it is just not fair: no one is getting paid to mod this place!

BUT what fewtch suggested seems like a good idea to me. To at least aim to translate Hydrogen Audio into a knowledge base+forum (like doom9, but better wink.gif ) rather than a Forum+knowldge base would be great. I know the wiki is like that, but I think fewtch is right: to catch newbies, it's cool if they find guides before they find the forum!

Whatever - I love HA. Really. But you'd probably noticed that. I'll try and jump in quickly and be nice to newbies more often though.

Cheers,
David.

I apologize for bitching there, if it bothered anyone (altho reserve the right to do it a little sometimes, in places where it isn't inappropriate).

Like most people I'm probably wrong about a lot of things, and since I'm not in the "inner circle" of HA (staff, moderators, etc.) I really have no idea how the board is run -- I made some assumptions that are quite possibly incorrect.

Anyway, things have moved on since... the way the issue is being dealt with looks good to me. The rules of the forum are now much more prominent at top of each page, and some have been added that (imo) "formalize" HA more as a scientific/technical forum that doesn't tolerate the kind of silliness and pseudoscience that other forums do. In fact it looks like HA has re-energized itself and posting/participation is more active since it came back online.

Anyway... I'm off topic to my own thread... huh.gif rolleyes.gif Just wanted to reply to what you said.

Fewtch, you are way too human. tongue.gif

Also, don't forget about the doom9 thread regarding HA:

I'm sure there are many more. This could be a HA thread thread. Round 'em up!

Not sure how to take that statement... is it a compliment, insult, general comment or what... laugh.gif

I'm here. Just decided to join after browsing a bit for a while. Am curious as to what I can learn from this site. I already learned a good deal from Head-Fi.

First thing I'd do is carefully read the FAQ and other rules. HA is much stricter than head-fi about what's allowed and disallowed, particularly in regard to sound quality claims not backed up by proper evidence. Head-fi is (for the most part) a subjectivist forum, HA is an objectivist forum.

It's OK. I'm usually pretty good about being outspoken. I will browse and question for the first month or 2, as I did on Head-Fi.

I thought those smiley things were supposed to help in this cold world of text.

Anyway, here's another one!
