QUOTE
-> 10.

A non-English post is anti-social as it excludes a large section of the forum members from the ongoing discussion. Do not use so called elite or "1337" speak as it makes your post harder to read and unreadable for some forum members. Do not use uncommen abbreviations as it can make it impossible for some forum members to understand what you wrote.

Explanation: Such posts degrade the quality of the forum since many other users can't understand their content and could therefore be considered SPAM.

Is Dibrom's signature in violation of TOS#10? huh.gif

This is obviously just a joke biggrin.gif and intended only as an excuse to my curiosity to know what his signature means (in some type of greek characters).
Canar
Uh-oh... if we start applying #10 to sigs, I'm in trouble too... unsure.gif blink.gif

laugh.gif Sigs are a bit of an exception, I'd imagine.
ScorLibran
Yep...TOS#10 states, "A non-English post is anti-social..."

Anti-social sigs are OK. tongue.gif

Now, whether it complies with TOS#11 depends on the translation...

"It is not allowed to have a signature longer than a few lines. Signatures may not link to offensive sites or have offensive content. Formatting is disabled." wink.gif
Messer
It may also violate #8. I mean: Dibrom, could you fix this equation (where's the "=" sign, anyway?) and prove it? tongue.gif
odnorf
Hehe! biggrin.gif Dibrom's signature is in ancient greeks and I am from greece but I can't really help you. I don't know anything about ancient greeks.
Lev
What the bleedin' hell does it mean anyway?
Continuum
Here's a clue wink.gif :

Well... you *could* regard a signature as a part of the post... wink.gif

Doubt it. I don't speak a word of spanish, but I can easily understand what your signature means biggrin.gif

Are you acquainted with the work from which this was indirectly quoted? smile.gif

Think continental philosophy and phenomenology smile.gif

It's best if I don't say anything. English rocks!

Kind of.

Okay, not really, but it's really popular. Like MP3, it sounds terrible, is not very efficient, but damn if it isn't the group choice.

You are probably aluding to Heidegger's "Platon: Sophistes". But no, I'm not familiar with it. sad.gif

My interest was kindled by the greek text (which was hard to read for me without proper unicode support and with my vanishing language skills wink.gif).

Close, but not quite. It's a quote from Heidegger's Sein und Zeit (Being and Time), which is a quote from Plato. To understand the quote in context, you'd have to read the work itself though wink.gif

Well, if you ask me, IMHO it really does. It IS in fact quite efficient and versatile as a language compared to the others I know and probably to others I don't know as well (Chinese, perhaps?). While it may not be very "musical" or "melodious" in the way it sounds, I think it is a matter of personal taste if you like the sound or not. Personally, I really like how it sounds spoken with a British accent (well, not all British accents).

Yes, english is by all means a great language. Although the rules are somewhat complicated if you go in-depth, and the vocabulary seems to have gotten somewhat out of control over the years... the biggest problem though is that there's no real "standardization"... each region seems to be evolving its own variant of the language... that can become problematic for something that's suppose to be the de facto world language. I'd let the english in control, but I suppose the americans / indians / australians etc. would disagree biggrin.gif

I btw agree on british english sounding like the best variant of spoken english (for me personally...). I really don't like the way americans speak, it reminds me of "farmers-speak"... no offence americans biggrin.gif On the other hand I happen to know my girlfriend prefers american, finding british "too stiff" hehe

PS: english is not my native language. I'm skandinavian smile.gif And for anyone wondering, the scandinavian languages are as different from english as english is from german.

Thanks for effectively confusing me--and reminding me to get back to work. I'm at Tufts, which is partially responsible(greg crane gets the credit I think) for the Perseus Project, so I couldn't figure out for a good 30 secs how I got from HA to last semester's homework-I was betting on some kind of divine signal until i actually checked the link.
Dibrom-stop being multitalented, it makes us LA people feel dumb when people who can do long division can quote stuff too. smile.gif
