in a lame VBR mp3, if I set -B 256, for example, how will the bit reservoir work in the 256 frames? Like in CBR?
No.. VBR doesn't use bit reservoir. That's why you shouldn't limit it to 256kbps.

hmmm... I think u r wrong
from lame documentation (
http://www.mp3dev.org/mp3/USAGE):
"(...) VBR modes minimize the use of the bit reservoir (...)"
I know that -B xxx isnt recommended, but in some cases its necessary (mp3 player compatibility).
Eh, I know Lame document says it minimizes, and because of that you should consider it like it doesn't exist. VBR doesn't use bit reservoir like CBR.
