hello,
what is your highest / lowest --alt preset standard average bitrate? Mine was so far 255 / 159 kbps.
It depends on some factors what bitrate I get when encoding. Some of them are genre of music and newer or older recordings. I guess that goes for you too

I have some old Jazz/Vocal with low average bitrate; Billie Holiday - Autumn in New York (126 kbps).
Some of the highest average bitrates, I've found in some distorted Death Metal recording; Dismember - Soon to Be Dead (291 kbps).

Don't know about highest average bitrate, but many tracks on CDs with older stuff would result in 128 kbps average if I wouldn't lower the minimum bitrate on those.

That's probably because they are in mono. aps defaults to 128 kbps on mono material.
124 kbps for Mohawk from "Bird & Diz" by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.

I have a song by converter from his cd, Blast Furnace, I forget which one that's in the neighborhood of 307 avg kbps w/ aps... as for lowest, I have an apoptygma berzerk song... again I forgot which one I thik it is "Time To Move On" on Welcome To Earth that averages around 80 kbps but that's because of a ten minute silence in the middle of the song.... Average seems to be 200-210 for my 6200 mp3s ecoded w/ lame 3.90.x aps some w/ 3.90.3 and most w/ 3.90.2

My highest so far has been something like 242 on some Marilyn Manson (I think), and my lowest was something like 136kbps (I completely forget what it was).
My music averages around 216kbps.
When I used to use lame-old mono reording always stuck around 126-132 (and I have A LOT of old mono recordings) Baroque stuff around 150-170. Loud compressed rock is the toughest for it-always 224-270 and up.

"I'd Give Anything" by Ash averages 254.
"Since I Left You" by the Avalanches only averages 235 with --aps but there's a big jump when moving to --ape... I started a thread a while ago about it and there were a few interesting replies, it's slightly off topic I know but if you are interested,
here is a link.
The above figures are whilst using LAME 3.92 by the way, as I encoded the tracks some time ago. I have since switched to 3.90.3 following the -z issue.
hellchild//without any answer (live) [MP3, 282kbps, 3:08]
curlupanddie//all [MP3, 276kbps, 0:05]
finch//letters to you [MP3, 272kbps, 3:19]
^-^ --alt-preset standard
Most of my music averages around 250kbps with --alt-preset standard. LAME really tends to bloat on any hardcore/metalcore/screamo music, adding -Y and/or ReplayGaining before encoding improves it a lot.
