what's the best video format to put in an ogg container with a vorbis audio stream?

also, are there any good tutorials about that would help me get started with ripping dvd's to ogg?

thanks

Well of the course the video format would be your preference, the 2 most popular being DivX 5.0.1 and XviD. And I believe both www.doom9.org and www.everwicked.com both have ogg media creation guides. But if you have any direct questions, don't feel afraid to ask me. However just do PM's as I feel this topic isn't quite relevant for this board as it's more a video question.

thanks bman, i'll give those sites a try... probly try divx first as it's quite popular.

I dabble quite a bit on the video side. Divx 5.01 atm seems like it might be a no go with OGG containers. There have been some problems reported with it over at the New Formats section that I help moderate over at doom9.org. You can read more on them there. For my money though or lack there of I am really loving Xvid. It allows me much more controll over the outcome. The B frames in Divx 5 helped, but not that much.

I second the XviD suggestion - the quality has improved enormously in the last few months.

I *also* second the suggestion of Doom9 for ripping guides. In particular, you might be interested in:

http://www.doom9.org/xvid.htm - the XviD guide

If you're interested in removing all of the old DivX codecs from your Windows system now you have XviD, you might also be interested in:

http://cutka.szm.sk/xvid/xvid.html

this is a DirectShow playback filter, which will playback XviD and all the old DivX formats (including 4.x and 5.x), with lots of postprocessing options.

Also check out the new ffdshow filter that has hit the sceen. it uses the Xvid dshow code along with bits of ffmpeg and mplayer code. There are a few mostly non visual bugs in it but for visual quality it has been all the rave the last couple of weeks.

XviD's doing quite well at the moment (and seems to be eerily mirroring the development of LAME), but we could still use more developers. There's a long way to go yet, and a lot of room for improvement.
