Full Version: Did MP3Gain 1.2.2 kill my tags?

Hello, I was trying the latest MP3Gain 1.2.2 version to adjust some files I just ripped with EAC and LAME, as I always do.

I always adjust my files on foobar2000 but this time I wanted to try MP3Gain's "undo" feature and meta-data use. So I loaded the files, adjusted to 95dB and hit Album Gain.
When I loaded my files in foobar2000 the tags were messed up! All the extra info was there (the box on the right, with the bitrate, the ReplayGain tags and the Undo info) but all the song and album names were gone! sad.gif

It was no biggie, as foobar2000's Masstagger retrieved the values from the filenames in a split-second, but what happened here?
Also, has it screwed the ID3 tags? I have two hardware players but none at this moment and I would like to know if they will have something to read ( wink.gif ) the name from.

Also, what is the correct way to use MP3Gain to change the gain in files AND have the meta-data RG tag for foobar2000 to also adjust on playback (so I can adjust my files for usage both on my portable AND in foobar, which I think was the developer's idea wink.gif )

Can anyone show me the way?

The problem you are having is actually due to foobar2000's handling of multiple tags. When a file is tagged with several types of tags, foobar2000 only uses the first one it finds. What happens is that EAC adds the ID3 tag with artist, title etc. And then when you use MP3gain, it adds replaygain info (and only that) into an APEv2 tag, which of course then doesn't include artist, title etc. When you play the file in foobar2k it only detects the APEv2 tag and you can't see the info in the ID3 tag.

I never noticed this problem, but it's true. dry.gif As soon as I change one field (genre) with Tag though, all the other Tags are available in APEv2 also.

This seems easy, just run MP3gain with the gain value you want for your portable. It writes the replaygain tags (for foobar2000 etc.) at the same time. The replaygain tags are relative to the gain written in the mp3 gain structures.

In foobar2000 don't forget to reload info from file smile.gif

Thanks for the info.

I vaguely remembered this issue had been discussed before, but for some reason I could not find the thread (must be that it was very late and I was kinda half-sleep).

Thanks anyway for pointing me to that thread.
