First post here, how's everyone doing? :-)

Well, I'm planning on ripping my CD collection this weekend, but before I do I'd love to clear some things up. All about monkey, two part question!

.5) First off, I use EAC all packed up beautifully by this nice fellow: http://encoding.n3.net/

1) I remember reading somewhere that ripping in High (instead of Extra High) is by far better, because it takes dramatically less space while not really sacrificing any significant quality. True? Doesn't seem to be, to me, but I thought I'd ask. Oh, also, I'm currently using MonkeysAudio Version 2 (Build 1.557)- should I think about upgrading?

2) I've been ripping things in Extra High APE, but they're individual apes. I've no idea why, but I just don't love this. APLs, though, have given me occasional problems in the past (they wouldn't play in FB2K)- any reason for this?

3) Lovely forum you got here, excellent resource!!

TIA to anyone who can lend me a quick hand, I apprechiate it B)

My bet is that you remember it wrong. smile.gif

Monkey's audio is lossless, so you're not sacrificing any quality in either case.

The only advantage that the 'high' setting has is that encoding and decoding are much less CPU-intensive compared to 'extra high', which may be important for older hardware. It is also going to produce slightly bigger files, just as expected.

Hi

You might want to do a few little trials to develop a procedure for ripping instead of just planning a mass encoding.
I think you should probably upgrade to the latest Monkey's Audio 3.98alpha? I think.
When i first started ripping there was a little bit of a learning curve to find out a few of the little matters when ripping - which as you say this is a great place to learn about them.

Good Luck

Thanks guys, upgraded, and am definitely going with Extra High now :-)

Also just going to go for individual apes, FB2K plays seamless anyhow, doesn't much matter.

thanks again,
