I have a computer, which crashes when I try entering into the bios settings. I think the CDROM and FDD boot options have been disabled as it does not detect any media in them devices. The HDD is formatted.

How do I install an operating system on this computer ???
rohangc
Your system crashes when you enter the BIOS? This is new-I haven't heard anything like this before. Can you tell us what happens exactly as it happens? You can try flashing the BIOS, but I am very sure that it will ruin the motherboard. Let us know more. Bye.

OK, when I start the computer, I press "DEL" to enter the bios. Once the bios screen is up I can move between the options for about 1 second and then it just locks up. I can still see the bios screen but can not move between the options. I can not even exit the bios screen. When the computer is in this state, the HDD light is on constantly! The only way to get out of this is by pressing the "reset" button on the case !!!

You'd better have the motherboard checked by a tech, it could also be bad RAM.
Your main concern is NOT installing the OS right now!

I had a similar BIOS crashing problem that I believe was a result of a partially successful BIOS flash - in a nutshell, even accessing the PC Health Status submenu would hard-lock the computer in BIOS (this was an Abit BX-133).

I concur with rohangc, try flashing the BIOS. You could run memtest86 to exclude the RAM, but you'd need to boot from a floppy to do so dry.gif

Hopefully the board model is printed on the PCB!

Don't you need to boot from a diskette to flash the BIOS?
Some motherboards allow to flash from a diskette with the Bios with an specially named file to do an emergency flash, however if the system is so unstable, I'd rather not do that.

Do you think it might have anything to do with the battery on the MoBo ??? Could a flat battery cause this type of problem.
WILU
Hi Jen!
The battery should not be a problem. If battery is bad then your settings in bios will be not saved. Try disconnect all devices and other things from your mobo and then check your fan and radiator on the processor. Check if there isn't space between it and processor - maybe it's overheating. Try also remove your ram and put it again. If it doesn't help check your power supply. In most cases it's the main reason of instability of the system.

Good Luck !!!

I know that the computer works. I am able to install windows 98 on it by installing the harddrive in another computer and installing windows 98. and then moving that harddrive back into the old computer. I just cant get into the bios to install other operating systems. I have tried doing the same thing with other operating systems but it does not work. this only seems to work with windows 98. I would like to install linux or windows 2000 on this computer, but I need to get into the bios and enable the cdrom drive or the floppydisk. but each time i try the bios screen freezes ???

To try to get into the BIOS, you should unplug all devices that are not needed (Hard drives, CD-Roms, network cards, sound cards) and see if it will let you in without freezing. If that doesn’t work, then you can try to clear your CMOS memory. WARNING - If your bios is corrupt then this could prevent your system from booting at all, and you might have to buy a new BIOS chip or motherboard. Or you could hot swap the BIOS chips, but that’s another story..... If you want to try to clear the CMOS, read on....

To do this, you have to unplug your computer and find the necessary jumper on your motherboard. Change the jumper to "Clear CMOS" for a period of ~1min, then change it back to normal and plug your computer back in. If it works, then the computer should load the BIOS defaults and allow you to edit the Bios... if it doesn’t work and the BIOS is corrupt, then you are out of luck... Try this at your own risk. Good luck sad.gif .

Freezing in bios is rare... Yes, try resetting the options to factory defaults. It could be a cpu overheating issue (maybe overclocked) or a faulty keyboard (yes keyboard) problem. Otherwise something is bad on the motherboard.. (test with everything but video and keyboard unplugged).
JEN
Thanks. I did the bios reset and now I can boot from floppy and CD. But it still crashes when I enter the bios. This is not really a problem anymore as the computer now has bootable drives biggrin.gif. However, I think I killed my harddrive because I kept on moving it around sad.gif.

When I normally switch the computer on, I am able to head the harddrive spin and also hear the seek noise. But now, it makes no sound.

I also installed that harddrive in my main computer, this harddrive does not let my main computer boot ???

Is it possible to fix this harddrive?

If the HD does not spin at all, make sure the power connector is plugged in tight. Also, see if it will spin with no IDE cable. If it doesn't spin, it's probably dead, and there is very little you can do to recover the data. Sorry sad.gif .
JEN
Yes, I think its dead. It lasted 8 years sad.gif
