At what Hz does alt preset standard cut off at? For instance, at 160 kbit vbr, I heard it cuts off a 16Hz.
Thanks.

AFAIK, 19000.
why, do you want to change the switches? that would not be recomended, as the (alt) presents as they are now are more tuned than other settings.

It cuts off at 19khz, and the easiest way to tell what the cutoff is is to use the --verbose switch when encoding a file.

PS - I don't think the cutoff for 160kbps VBR is 16khz (not with the --alt-presets anyway...)

Huh, where did he say he wanted to change the switches? huh.gif biggrin.gif

uhm... right there, see it? oh, it's gone, too late wink.gif
as he posted in mp3 general and not in mp3 tech, I just assumed that he wanted to change something;
(and of course I had to write some more words, for making my signature look smaller, as of late... laugh.gif )

standard lowpasses at 19 kHz, extreme at 19.5 kHz, and insane at 20.5 kHz

And for the CBR/ABR presets:
CODE
const band_pass_t freq_map[] = {
      {  8,  2000},
      { 16,  3700},
      { 24,  3900},
      { 32,  5500},
      { 40,  7000},
      { 48,  7500},
      { 56, 10000},
      { 64, 11000},
      { 80, 13500},
      { 96, 15300},
      {112, 16000},
      {128, 17500},
      {160, 18000},
      {192, 19500},
      {224, 20000},
      {256, 20500},
      {320, 20500}
  };

Just run Lame, it is displayed on the screen when running.

Thanks all for your replies. I was just curious...no intentions of changing anything.

You can always do what you want with your encoding settings... the caution is just that whenever you modify the presets you will almost always get lower quality.
NeoRenegade
That's not necessarily true.

If you're picky about artifacts but some lack of high frequencies doesn't bother you, you can always lower the lowpass in a preset.

Like myself, I think Alt Preset CBR 128 isn't too shabby with the lowpass at 16kHz.

It's funny because lame standard uses 19000hz cut-off & mpc standard uses 20500 (I think) , which is the wiser choice? I ask because I told a friend I would pass 100 or so CDS's to mp3, he wanted highest quality & must be very complient (for hardware playback) so I was thinking of using Cool Edit Pro's FhG MP3 enc @ 256 or 320kbps, JS, (fast or slowest?) but was unsure of cut-off option. Is lame a wiser choice? I would like to hear from John.V as I know he has done some testing with Cool Edit's FhG enc
