Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody can recommend a good software player for my iPaq H2210, it must be able to play Ogg Vorbis and does anybody know of one that supports ReplayGain ??

I'm playing around with "Pocket Player" just now but I havn't registered it yet, I thought some of you guys/ gals with more experience than me with PPC's might have some knowledge to share.

Thanks

PocketMusic Supports Vorbis, though only in the paid version. The free version is mp3 only, and also has skin support and hardware button mapping disabled. I'd reccomend tracking down the old free 1.5 version if you take that route, it still allows hardware buttons even though the current 2.0 release does not.

Winampaq is a bit buggy but has skin support and plays mp3s and oggs just fine. Personally, I'm still using Pocket Music Free. Winampaq wasn't up to my standards, though I'd definitely watch it assuming the devs ever release a new version.

Pocket MVP for me. Freeware, can play ogg, but has a not so well thought out UI.

I want do add a question: Anyone found a player which play HE-AAC files yet? Maybe something based on FAAD2?

Arguably the best player mp3 and ogg would be "gsplayer". It's free and is one fantastic piece of sofware. Look on brighthand.com for the link.

Well... no one else is recommending PocketPlayer (and you're playing with it) so I will. I personally prefer it to the rest, I can use it without a stylus, it supports skinning if you've a mind, it's intuitive (for me at least) and customer support is responsive to any questions and more importantly to feature requests (I've made two that will be in the next release).

I tried others.... but kept coming back to PP on my iPAQ 2215, and doubt I'd use anything else.

I have to vote for PocketPlayer as well. I have tried all major ones and I have to say that I've liked PocketPlayer the most. PocketMVP is good for movies, but for music its UI leaves much to be desired. It often froze my Dell Axim X5 when touching the screen during playback. TodayPlayer (freeware) is a simple player that integrates with the today screen and supports Vorbis. The downside is that it doesn't support multi-directory playlists. PocketMusic (reg version) is quite good until I got to know PocketPlayer. Hardware buttons, large buttons to non-stylus operation, great GUI. I have to say that PocketMusic 2.5 might be better than PocketPlayer by now, but the latter still does great for me.

As for feature requests, how difficult would it be to talk Conduits into implementing HE-AAC? Are there any royalties involved for the inclusion of FAAD2 into commercial software? A yet wilder dream... MPC wink.gif

Both the FAAD2 and MPC decoder are GPL which means the player must also be open source and freely available. Hardly very attractive for makers of commercial software.

Send their support team a request and see what they say.

just wanted to say thanks to everyone who recommended PocketPlayer! I have been looking for something since I bought my 2215 that was as feature rich as PocketMusic but wouldn't kill my iPaq every 5 minutes. I play MP3s from my 2.2GB Microdrive and I needed something that has a buffer (the HDD can lag sometimes or even 'skip' compared to the solid-state CF cards). I was also looking for some other simple little things like a count down for the song, rather then a count up - I have used this to supplement my vinyl and CD collection when I DJ and my iPaq has saved the day... but its nice to be able to know how much time you have left! I also wanted an easy to use shuffle - something the built in MP9 didn't have. I tried gsplayer, but the playlist wont add directories - have to add files manually - at least I couldn't figure it out! The playlist editor is confusing with the Pocket MVP player, and I had to hunt for the PPC2003 version - It looks pretty cool so I didn't remove it when I got frustrated with it but I am very happy with PocketPlayer so far - it's got the features, stability and ease-of-use that I have been praying for!

PocketPlayer has worked the best for me so far.
