Full Version: Just made a quick-guide for mpc/mp3 beginners. Any comments?

Hello!

I'm rather new to mpc. Anyway, I took the trouble of posting a quick-guide about mpc and mp3. My aim was to make it helpful for the very beginners and to promote mpc.

I will appreciate any suggestions or comments about the content of the page.

BTW, these are the GREAT phorums: Mayhem & r3mix! I've searched them and gathered much info. (But never did any cut-n-paste --- that's for sure.)

P.S. I realize that the "download" sound of my page may be a little inappropriate on this board, but I believe it is a neccessity for such a page, because it's the only way to get attention of 99% of regular users and to make mpc format more popular.

Hey Konstantin!

I'll take a closer look later, but few quick things:

1.
QUOTE
© mpc may soon become non-free (just like mp3), so we have to hurry up downloading!

At the moment, there's no indication whatso ever that mpc becomes non-free in the future. In fact if everything goes as it has been going, MPC will remain free. Only if some patent holders start to claim their patents, the non-free issue becomes questionable. So far these companies holding patents have been very very passive, despite that Andree contacted them.
Also current encoder will remain free in any case. Decoder will remain free what ever happens.

Project Mayhem phorums
The best ever discussion boards about audio compression (mp3, mp3pro, MPEGplus, vorbis etc)

It would be good if you'd change this to "HydrogenAudio forums". Project Mayhem -concept will soon be no more, because it was only confusing. (I still don't know myself what exactly it is/was biggrin.gif)
Also, please refer to MPC using the official name - MusePack. You could use MusePack/MpegPlus if you want to keep the old name present. Could be nice if you include AAC to that list too. smile.gif

I'll give more feedback later.

WOW... that's a great site you have! It has tons of good information (and it looks accurate to me, but then again I'm not an authority on the subject), all well-organized and easy to read, with lots of reference links and hyperlinking within the site. It's by far the best site I've seen on the subject of MPC downloading and educating new users. It's not necessarily the biggest or the most in-depth, but when one considers the target audience and the goals of the site, then the site truly succeeds.

If I wanted to show someone information about MPC or high-quality MP3, this is definitely the site I would point them to. What's important is that this site does not spread misinformation, but debunks it (or it will, once the reference links are completed).

Keep up the excellent work!

OK, I hide this line with comment marks. If the winds are going to change I can un-comment it back.

Check, put it on "to-do" list.

Check, I will. Just didn't pay so much attention to AAC until now, 'caus it is proprietary and targeted for commercial use (is it?).

Waiting very paciently. No rush.

By the way, just have discovered that EAC actually can connect to cddb.com, not only to freedb. That was nice! Edited my note on that topic in the quick-guide accordingly.

No, AAC isn't proprietary. It's an ISO standard, exactly the same way as MP3. And there's not really a "target", but you could say that it's streaming (although it can be perfectly used on other markets, like high-quality audio archiving).

Roberto.

SometimesWarrior, thanks for your support!

All right, so far we've got this one positive reply, and no negative. So I assume the site was not a waste of time. It feels satisfactory.

Good.

-------------------

I updated the pages after JohnV's advice + some more + added links to AAC, PCABX, CDex, Tag+frontend.
E.g. the paragraph about new feature -- automatic tagging with mpc batch frontend -- those guys Speek & Case are fast! -- Cool.
