looking at the:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=15985got some questions;
1. any dates of release?
2. ~ cost?
3. ~ quality compared to divx/xvid? (i like the speed very mucho)
4. i wonder what kind of dvds can one directly transcode? (are they killing the protection schemes) (found the answer - only unencrypted)
5. can this thingy encode from *.avs? (no)
6. licensing for unlimited internal/external corporate use?

3. ~ quality compared to divx/xvid? (i like the speed very mucho)
I'd say politically correctly that the quality is reasonably close to divx/xvid, at least it shouldn't be any huge disappointment, on the contrary, especially considering the speed..

Well, in those countries where it is legal, you can
help the situation a bit.

I was wondering if it would have avs input, that would have been handy.

Well, Recode2 is the first product to implement ND. It's mainly a software for purely DVD copying, rather than general video encoding. I'd bet it won't be the only software having ND support..
Hi JohnV,
How much detail is given by ND. Can you post a screen shot of encoded movie?
Thanks.

Why not just use DVDShrink it is free, fast, powerfull, easy to use it works 100% and as I said it is free
As far as I know, DVDShrink is only for DVD to DVD copying. Recode can also do DVD to MP4, that is, DVD to CD...
jtclipper
Dec 3 2003, 04:14
yes but DVD -> CD is much better suited for DivX or XVid and there are tools for that as well Vidomi for example is free,fast,....and so on
Yes, but Recode uses Nero Digital, which is Ahead's competition for DivX and XviD, so then again, it's a matter of taste, or a matter of curiosity: Don't you want to know how good the quality of this new codec compares to DivX and XviD? Specially seeing the numbers here about speed? I know I do

hehe yes this is true speed is nice
Question :
Does it support subtitles and which player do I have to use.
Now I use bsplayer for DivX 5.02 movies with str files for subtitles and AC3 stream for sound using mlcom.ax for filter.
Thanks JohnV for updated ND thread.

I think with 3ivx splitter, any player can currently play mp4 files. I can also suspect there will be a nero DS filter capable of mp4 decoding. By the way the files may be having AAC, so we need either CoreAAC or Nero audio decoder. ( if it supports).

Looks like an extremely polished program.
I at least, got the impression that it will fit nicely with both unexperienced users and the more hardcore encoder

Looking forward to quality comparison with the compitition [who will be first?

5. can this thingy encode from *.avs?
You can most likely use the avs -> avi wrapper included with recent ffvfw compiles.

Any idea's on when it will be released to the general public.
I read somewhere that is was due for release in December.
How realistic is that.... after all, aHead is not know for releasing software on time.
December .... what year ... ah
hmmmmm.... are there cropping options on this thing? ie. for cutting out overscan space or removing the black bars if the source was in letterbox format...
Yes, cropping and resizing can be done. You can either set all the values for it manually, or let the application find the right values.

So how do you prepare the DVD files for input? And do you have to have purchased the proprietry mpeg-2 decoder to use Recode 2 to backup a DVD to a CD using NeroDigital codecs?
kl33per
Dec 3 2003, 22:03
You won't have to buy any mpeg-2 decoder. Everything you need will come with Recode 2.
Is there any information about that MPEG4 subtitle stream option that Recode2 seems to offer according to the pics.

as there is no real standard compliant way to store subs in .mp4 atm (if you dont want to use mpeg-4 systems), recode stores the vobsub subtitles directly from the dvd in .mp4 by using the udts atom (which allows you to attach anything you want in mp4)

Can you
Recode and keep
DVD Menus at the same time? You can NOT in DVDshrink!

I heard that also, long time ago...

Umm what are you talking about? Sure you can, i do it all the time. In fact, DVDShrink 3 is designed primarily for that.
edit: Or i misunderstand what you mean by "recode".

And where is AVC?
Also known as h.264.
Hello gurus?
Any plans to get this modern codec to nero?

Here is what I mean:
I created a DVD from my daughter's wedding video. I captured video from the tape, demuxed, authored in Scenarist, added interactive menus and some extra features. In Scenarist "Layout Editor" I created a DVD structure (AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS) on the hard drive. It plays beautyfully in WinDVD or PowerDVD. But it's too big for the DVD! Just too much material.
At this point I tried DVDshrink 3. I wanted to keep all menus and wanted to lower the size of video, by degrading it. I tried to re-author and could not get my menus.
And here I'm asking if Nero Recode can take care of it. This is what I ment...
So, will Nero Recode be able to keep menus and re-author the video?
JohnV, Did you see any way to control aspect ratio? I've been retaining anamorphic ARs in my encodings.

Why did u choose Re-author m8?
that option is for movie only and select titles you want to keep.
just use the normal option and you will be fine m8.
let it scan files.........
and leave every thing on automatic settings and click backup.
choose folder to output to and hey presto

No, no AR controlling/AR flag, only cropping, but this is something which I think Ahead should look into at least in updates.

Recode 2 hasn't been released yet. All the articles and guides are based on a press copy distributed by Ahead Software AG to several web sites and magazines. The public version will hopefully be available soon.

You didn't realize that "in two weeks" is a really, really old, probably the most dreaded phrase in the IT industry

In case you didn't know, "I'll be ready in two weeks" coming from a programmer means "never".

Has anyone experienced any problems where Recode 2 restarts the machine in mid conversion. DVD -> MP4.
I have tried 4 different DVD, a number of times, and each time (at random places) the machine will reset.
I have reinstalled XP Pro on a seperate partition to ensure that it was not related to anything I have installed.
It still happens on the clean installation.
Any Ideas ?
any ideas on what must i purchase to get '5.1 ac3 decoding -> 5.1 he acc encoding' working? (ahead page is confusing at least...)

You have to buy the Nero DVD Plugin from the Ahead Online Store.
