Full Version: Bad quality resampler needed

Hi.

I want to do some test related to this.

For that purpose I need a resampling software (.wav file -> resampler -> .wav file) that does this as crappy as possible (no filtering/anti-aliasing, calculating samples using nearest neighbour/linear interpolation or similar).

CoolEdit with lowest quality settings and pre/post filters turned off is still way too good.

Best results so far I got this way:

Load file with CEP -> save as .raw file -> open with photoshop (4 channels x 8bit) -> resize (only changing horizontal resolution using nearest neighbour/pixel repetition) -> save as .raw file -> open with CEP.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

You might want to try CD Wave's resampling - quite awful if you do something like 44 -> 11 -> 44 conversions, as it uses the Microsoft built-in resampler function.

Just open file, save, select a different format, save, and again...

Try winamp2 diskwritter. It can resample using microsoft acm resampler. Sounds quite bad for me wink.gif

Goldwave was really bad, when I tried a 48->44.1 kHz resampling on some material that was limited to 11kHz. As for my hearing, it is way below HA average, but I could pick out the original very easily when I ABX:ed it.

Maybe it is using Microsofts resampler?

Old SQRsoft crossfading plugins for Winamp did resample 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz using nearest neighbour, as well as Justin's Nullsoft gapless plugins, IIRC. It was back in 2001...
SoundForge 4.5 could resample using linear interpolation (quality 1, no antialias).

You cannot get much worse than the Windows ACM, load a Wave into Sound Recorder, Save As and change the format.

Now I remember, did that once. It can't get any worse. Goldwave is definitely not using that.
