Hi,
Well I don't know if this is clear, but I'll try to explain :
I have MP3s that I want to tag later, not now.
But I need a program that will remember the tags
that I want to write later to my MP3s...
How can this be done ?
Should I use a cataloguer ?
I want to do as if I was going to tag the files, but
I don't want to actually write the tags, I just want
to save all the tags and be able to write them later
with just a click !

In other words.... I want to do virtual tagging, that can
become real tagging whenever I want to !
Well - i'm only running on one coffee so far so it doesn't make any sense right now
First
- The first question is are you ripping the mp3s from CDs you own? or are these ones that you have downloaded that do not have tags?
To answer your question I am not aware of any program that will save tags directly in another format (something like a text file) - the idea has merit but doesn't exist AFAIK.
Other than that if you have the CDs then all you have to do is re-insert it, use a tagging program (I like Tag&Rename personally but there are other good ones including foobar) to save the tags when you want.
If you just have downloaded the mp3s then I think you'll find that searching the internet for the tag info may take quite a bit of times and that putting the info in a vitual tag may be secondary to the time it takes to just fill in the real tag. I know a few taggers allow you to export the tag information to other formats but I'm not aware of any that let you import. Even if you could I still think it would be easier to tag the files, then save to a 'virtual tag', then delete the tag information, and retag when you want. Maybe if you explain why you are trying to do this it might make things clearer.
off for more coffee

OK...I'll try to explain it better...
(excuse me but I don't speak
very well English)
I have about 150 CD-Rs with MP3s (from radio shows)
on it. These MP3s are not tagged at all
(No need to say that there isn't any internet
tag database for these files, because it's not music, only speech)
I'd like to back up these files on DVD-R. And while I'm at it,
I think it would be nice to add tags to the files.
But I don't have a DVD-R writer at the moment, so
I thought that I could at least prepare the tags,
so that everything will be ready when I can write DVD-Rs...
I can't put all the MP3s on hard disk to tag them because they take
too much space,
so I thought I could save only the tags, and write them to the real files later...
sorry - lost my last post
I'm afraid you are not in luck then.
You can obviously save the information in text files and then copy & paste later, but that is a lot of copy & paste.
You can try looking at other taggers to see if they would support some kind of file import but I'm not aware of any.

I don't know what other players do this, but Foobar 2000 will store tags in its database. It's not clear how or when that database gets refreshed (aside from doing it manually). I know that it can write tags TO files based on content within its database, so it might be worth looking into.

Use Foobar 2000!
Under Preferences>Databse U Can select don't write changed tags to files!
Then just add your CD-Rs,tag your MP3s.
Later you insert the CD-Rs again, select the files (Foobar remembers the changed tags) uncheck "don't write...", select all files from one CD-R, rightclick>Masstagger>Rename Files>Under output filename format use sth like this: <ROOT>:\<DIR>\%_filename%
then all files will be copied to the DIR-ectory you've selected (with modified tags)

This should work if you add your drive to "restrict directories to" in the database settings and NEVER click on "remove dead entries" until you've backup your files to dvd (meanwhile, you should backup the database file to be safe).
Selecting "don't write modified tags to files" is useless here. You'll get a warning telling you that files haven't been updated but the database will be.

OK, I've just tried Foobar....
But it seems to handle only ID3v1 ... is it right ?
If so, this is not what I'm looking for !
I need ID3v2 tags, because I need to put a lot
of info, especially on the comment tag... ID3v1 is just
too small !

Wrong
get component here:http://www.cqasys.com/projects/kode54/index.php
install and take a look at the standard inputs in the preferences.
And please, feel free to use the amazing HA search feature.
I think you can download the freedb software from freedb.org that would let you set your own local database. I have no idea how hard it is to administer.

well , the freedb stuff seems too complicated for me...
I've tried foobar and it seems to work, but :
The ID3v2 tags are saved to the foobar database
but when I want
to write them back to the files (using the "rewrite files tags from the database" function), foobar writes them to ID3v1 tags instead of
ID3v2 ... I really can't undrestand why...

It also writes them to APEv2 tags as well, which Peter feels is better than ID3v2. You might be able to find/use a good mass tagger to convert them. I've heard lots of good things about
The GodFather, maybe it can finish the job.

but I think I'm on the right track...
Good to know I'm in error
