Greetings everyone.
Slashdot, The Register and Heise have this story in today's newstickers.
Microsoft's DRM V2 (the one bundled with Windows Media Player 7 and 8) has been cracked. A small command line utility will extract the crypto key from your license file and generate an unprotected version of your WMA files. And all comes with full source code.
Enjoy your new possibilities for "fair use". Transfer particular WMA files to your portable player where files haven't gone before ;-)
Software-based DRM won't work. I think the industry leaders are inspired by an illusion.
If this PC-based DRM hacking will continue, content owners will try to force manufacturers of audio/video hardware to include DRM in their products. Integrated in circuits.
