As you say, many people here are telling that AC-3 *could be* inferior in terms of quality than MP3.

Quality of AC3 is similar to that of MP2. So, yes, AC3 is worse than a good MP3 implementation, no matter what version you use.
BTW: I tested the one in Vegas. It's the same version as the Surcode plugin for Premiere. It seemed to me that quality was similar but speed was better than 6.2.2. And that's a great thing, since speed of 6.2.2 is outrageous.
