Full Version: WinAmp lossless broadcast over a LAN?

I know this forum isn't really for this kind of thing, but I thought I might ask you anyway, seeing as you have the same interests as my aim.

I have a lot of media on my harddrives, mostly as vorbis -q5 (some with gt3b1) and lame --alt-preset [various]. I'm having a party tomorrow and I want to broadcast this over my WLAN to a laptop on my amplifier. Thing is though I don't want to lose any more quality than I already have, and I also want to be able to control the stream from my desktop.

Anyway I thought I might be able to broadcast raw WAVs over the LAN, which should be fine and would solve my problems, however I can't figure out for the life of me how to do it. Does anyone have any ideas? I figured some of you may have already done this, perhaps?

Many thanks for any help.

You may use the SlimServer software from http://www.slimdevices.com.
It's made to be used to stream to a SqueezeBox, but you can use any player. Just point WinAMP to the URL http://yourmachine_address/stream.mp3, for example, and you are OK.
You can configure it about the conversion it will have to do, so you could set it up to decode the OGG on the fly and stream them as uncompressed WAV.

You could then control the server (various configuration info, music directories, playlist, etc.) with a browser, from http://yourmachine_address:9000

Bye!

Hey

Thanks for your reply but I was really wanting to use Winamp as the source, not the client.

I don't think there is any plugin for WinAmp that will stream the raw PCM (WAV) rather than re-encode it. You could always ask Oddsock to make it an option in Oddcast, but it would be of limited use & surely not done in time for your LAN.

Why not just share a folder with the music and then access the files over network(I mean SMB, \\server\share, you know) using WinAmp launched on the laptop?

edit: I also want to be able to control the stream from my desktop
For this, you can use a program like VNC or RAdmin.

Obviously I thought of this but it still isn't exactly what I want. I just can't believe no-one has witten a plugin to broadcast WAVs over a LAN that's all.

Maybe what you want is not such a meaningful and sensible thing to do after all. That's why no one programmed it. wink.gif

What? Shoutcast but with WAV output? That has loads of uses, because MP3 destroys data regardless, especially when compounding artefacts.

But why use WinAmp for streaming? I like RM's solution better.

Yep. I couldn't even figure out what that new one was supposed to be until I looked at the image name.
