Full Version: ABC/HR: Audio Comparison Utility Released

I have released an audio comparison utility for win32 called ABCHR (stands for ABC/Hidden Reference) under LGPL.

http://ff123.net/abchr/abchr.html

The utility allows blind rating of multiple audio files. Each time a listener rates a sample, he is forced to choose between the sample and the reference (he doesn't know which is which, hence the reference is "hidden").

The utility should facilitate statistical analysis of group listening tests by providing a method for post-screening of listener responses. If a listener just guesses and repeatedly rates the reference less than 5.0, then his results are suspect and may be discarded.

The utility in it's initial form is ready to be used in group tests. However, there are some future enhancements which would be very useful, including the ability to seek within a file, and the ability to "hot" switch between samples without starting at the beginning every time.

By range, do you mean a section in time of the music sample? What did you have in mind for the range selection and deselection?

My only comment/compliant with the keyboard controls for ABX is that the buttons are too far away. It would be nice to be able to pick what you want (z = A, x = B, c = X, d = stop, or whatever I want). Because I personally like to put my headphones on and close my eyes when intently listening, and not having to open my eyes to listen to the sample I want would be nice.

Other than that, the program works perfectly. You might consider changing the "results" file format to something that is easier to automatically parse (but, you could have already spent a lot of time setting it up so that it is easy, and then the recommendation would be stupid). Another suggestion might be to automatically save the results file as like "results_[configname]_date.txt" or something, but still allow the user to change it if they want.
