I have just started using LAME, and i have been recommended several different versions. Right now I am using 3.90.3.

Is there any reason to use version 3.90.2 instead? (I read somewhere that it is the best version for the --alt-preset options)

Or should i use version 3.92 instead? According to the audio encoding hq, LAME version 3.91 and above uses a very "sophisticated implementation" of the joint stereo mode.

I am also wondering what my commands should be. I guess i'll be using the --alt-preset extreme option, but is it a bad idea to use addittional commands with the presets? I want to add the option -m s (the preset is using joint stereo, i thought that was only good for lower bit-rates. And what if i am using a version below 3.91 that doesn't have the new implementation of the joint-stereo mode, shouldn't i then use stereo with the presets?)

Please read the FAQ for MP3s - that will answer all the above questions (and probably some you haven't thought of yet).
