Full Version: Problem detecting manufacturer of CD-R media

I want to find out which manufacturer some of my CD-R blanks come from, but it appears to be a problem (with my drive?).

I have tried using Nero CD Speed, Nero InfoTool and LiteOn Smart-Burn Media Check, but i haven't been able to determine the manufacturer of a single CD. I have tried all the different types of blanks i have. And that would be Memorex, Maxell, Samsung, No name, BenQ, Sony, Asus, and two different types of Verbatim blanks. Isn't it rather unlikely that none of my blanks contain information about the manufacturer?

Smart-Burn will report "Nominal Capacity = 230.57MB" no matter what disc i insert.

Nero CD Speed has every field blank no matter what disc i insert. (image included)

Does anyone know why i am having this problem? Is there something wrong with my writer? (it is an Asus CRW-4824A drive)

First, try to update the firmware (http://www.asus.it/support/download/item.a...24A&Type=Latest). If that doesn't help, maybe it's a problem with your IDE cable or the drive position (master/slave) or jumpering..

Also,
try using cdridentifier v1.63
new ide drivers
aspi layer
Garathor
I am using the latest firmware (1.35), and i had the same problem when i was using version 1.00 too.

As you can see on the image below i didn't have any luck with cdridentifier either.

I am almost certain that the IDE cable is not my problem. The writer is set as slave, and placed correctly on the cable.

I will try changing aspi, which version is recommended?

I used ForceASPI 1.7 to install ASPI layer v4.60 ...and it did not help sad.gif

Most likely you use CloneCD or Alcohol with the function "Hide CDR Media" enabled.
Garathor
I don'nt have CloneCD installed at the moment, so it must be Alcohol then. I looked through the options, but i couldn't find that setting. Where is it?
JeanLuc
It is activated during the standard install but I cannot exactly tell you where to find it since I do not use it ... but the feature is buried within the program's advanced options IIRC ... just look for "hide CDR media"
Garathor
I have looked through all the options, and i can't find that setting anywhere. Which version are you referring to? I use 1.4.7 Build 1005. Is it possible that they have left out the choice wheter to use this setting or not in the latest versions?
JeanLuc
hm

it is a setting used to circumvent copy protections ... which makes it illegal in europe ... could be that they left it out ... did you already read alcohol's help on ATIP ?

Or do you have any DVD installed ? Maybe Daemon Tools ?
Garathor
I searched the alcohol support forum for atip, but i didn't find anything useful. I do not have Daemon tools installed.

I should have been more specific. There is a link at radified to the updated Adaptec drivers. I had a problem with burning cds a while ago and these fixed it:

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/d...odkey=ASPI-4.70

sorry I accidentally tricked you into using ForceASPI.
Garathor
I don't think that is the problem, because i already had installed version 4.71.2.
I used ForceASPI to change to v4.60 because it appears to be recommended.
Garathor
You were right JeanLuc, Alcohol DID hide the information. (I must have missed that option last night). I have now disabled the option "Ignore media type" in emulation options, and everything works fine, biggrin.gif
JeanLuc
Nice to read that you got it to work ... smile.gif
