Quotes from XMFan.com forums:
QUOTE(Ziggy @ Jan 7 2004, 03:34 PM)
5.1 sound will flow through ANY channel that the programming was 5.1 to begin with. Obviously Cinemagic will be the biggest beneficiary, but as more programming is introduced in 5.1, it will flow through on ANY channel.

Side note:

Anyone have an Optical out PCR/SKYFI and want to check Cinemagic now?

How will this be done?

5.1 is already in a compressed format as i understand it. the funny one is HOW do they plan to get 5.1 to the speakers? nothing has digital out "officially" so the sound would have to be matrixed into the stereo signal, this would be a decoder is already in them!!. an optical COULD concivibly carry the encoded 5.1, anyone have a home theater that autodetects the signal type and says PCM (Stereo), Dolby Digital, DTS, able to tell us?

I think this may be right. Likely, XM may not broadcast DTS or Dolby Digital, but a matrix format (like Dolby Pro Logic II). Also, more posts from that thread seem to indicate it.

Nevertheless, the site says:

Dolby Digital 5.1 channel available soon!

A Dolby Digital channel would require a different radio for most listeners (except the modded radios with TOSLINK). Such a move would require an expensive hardware upgrade. Would XM do that?

I'm psyched about no commercials on the music channels -- the commercials did get on my nerves at times. I tried Sirius (with no commercials on the music channels) but the reception was too iffy.

Where can you get info on how to do a mod to get a toslink optical out with a SkyFi tuner (or did I mis-read something)?
Mono
You can buy one through XMFan's store (direct link to the SkiFi). I don't know if there are instructions to mod one yourself.

All of the current generation of XM receivers use the same receiver "can" inside.

This includes the SkyFi, Roady, Commander, PCR, etc....

Digital audio output is available on pins 6 to 9 of the receiver can. Add a SPDIF transmitter and your ready to go biggrin.gif

XM's sound quality page: looks like it was matrix surround.
