Hi, I teach audio engineering at MAINZ (Music and Audio Institue of New Zealand). I was wondering if it would be worth introducing a lossless codec to the students so they/we can save on HD space. Any thoughts on the value of this in an educational setting? Would the students get confused, lose data etc... Which codec would be most appropraite? How many real world studios use lossless codecs for audio?

The students use PC and MAC, logic audio, Protools, Stand alone hard disk recorders.

Your thoughts will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

-Iain

Take a look at FLAC. There's an open-source reference implementation, formal format and codec design documentation, and a well documented API.
