I'm looking for some software that can do basic track mixing so that I can create the compilations that I've always wanted to - I made plenty of tapes in college, but the fade-outs were always a challenge, and I'd like to do some basic between track mixing as well. It doesn't have to be free. Any ideas? I know Cool Edit got purchased by Adobe, but I don't know if it has the cuesheet type of thing available for burning the mix to cd with appropriate track indices.

Any help is appreciated.

For quick, simple (free) mixing you can use Audacity, and you can visually index your CUE sheets with CD Wave. There are more elegant - and more expensive - solutions, but for what you described this might be a good starting point.

I use WaveLab and its Audio Montage feature. You can create any crossfading you want between tracks, totally adjustable, create your own track indices and burn the compilation with its own recording engine! It's not free.
