Hydrogenaudio Forums > Hydrogenaudio Forum > Validated News
David Nordin
As of today, Foobar2000 fullymakes use the all so popular BitTorrent format to distribute it's downloads on the Foobar2000 homepage.
Dibrom edited the pages and made the torrents - which can be checked for status here.
The hosting of Foobar2000 has meant great bandwidth usage for the Hydrogenaudio community since the start and now - for everyone's convenience in terms of ease and speed - downloads will be offered as BitTorrent links (.torrent).

Although http downloads are still offered it is encouraged that users choose to use BitTorrent to perform their downloads for the benefit of us all.
Also it is encourage that those of you who can stay open with your torrents to contribute to other people downloading, thus increasing the overall bandwidth and making other people happy,

Information about usage is included on the downloadpage along with recommendations of clients.

It looks like it's on eMule network too: eMule Content Database

Great idea. I love this audio player so much. I can't program so this is a good way I can give back. By sharing all the downloads through BT. Thanks guys!

It may also be a good idea to host the foobar2000 downloads on "shareware/freeware" sites like TUCOWS, ZDNET, Simtel (or similar).
I think Foobar2000 would qualify easily for those kind of sites, RareWares is a different story. If that part of Hydrogenaudio is using a lot of bandwith Bittorents or E-donkey download could also be considered.

Hmm. Either I still don't understand how BitTorrent works, or current BitTorrent clients are average-user unfriendly.

RW is consuming an average 1.5Gb/day

The problem with distributing RW files through p2p is that most of them are updated often. A new version would be available before the earlier one was spread...

Anyway, by far the most popular download is Lame 3.90.3. I think that one could be torrented...

current BitTorrent clients are average-user unfriendly.

Most of them are VERY unfriendly.

But I had good experiences with TorrentStorm.

You still don't depend on bittorrent to get foobar2000!

If people would stop using cracked up clients like Azureus and ABC and just use the original one and read the FAQ, they'd probably realize that BitTorrent is not really hard to use.

Another excellent/more extensive FAQ is located here.

Well Azureus has some nice featurse like set priority to some file higher in torrent and all torrents are managed in one window.
In basic use original BitTorrent is probably the best.

Just wanted to say great idea but thanks for leaving the http links in because my Uni specifically bans BitTorrent use for anything (and they can detect it).

I suggest shareaza for use with bittorrent downloads - VERY USER FRIENDLY

I would also suggest you look at using torrentaid for making the torrents as the torrents will continue to work with shareaza even if the tracker goes down (trackerless torrents)

the problem is not with those clients since IMO they're as easy to use as the original client, the problem is that most users don't like to read and learn. you can see that with foobar itself

What's wrong with Comepletedir?

i'm sharing the latest version of fb2k on soulseek already for quite a while - however, i'm not online 24/7.

Maybe ed2k-links should be posted too one the fb2k-website, in addition to the torrents.

i think download sites like download.com are still the most easiest and most professional way to make a software available in the internet if you can't pay the traffic anymore.

but i'm not sure, if download.com is really free.

Why is it that if I cancel a BitTorrent dl in the middle (got it to work w/ my firewall cool.gif blink.gif ) that I cant delete the partial file on my HD? It says there has been a file access violation, even when BT is not running or even uninstalled. It won't delete even when I go into Windows safe mode crying.gif . To get rid of the partial files I have to dl them completely then delete the full files. Any help would be appreciated.

What client are you using? Any chance you were downloading is an AVI? Sounds like windows is still locking the file for whatever reason.

Anyway BT is amazing. I'll seed foobar on one of my torrent machines.

With quick look at the homepage it looks like one more all in one software with all the audio playing stuff...

Jup, shareaza can do many things, but none of them good.

Standard client v3.3 - File is a .exe - foobar_special.exe to be exact. Using Windows 2000 SP4 it it helps...

you are most welcome to use the eMule content database of course.

drop me a PM and I'll add you to the trusted releaser group which can edit their posts, if you are not alrady.
if you have "special" needs, that could be arranged probably smile.gif

I suggest you remove access to the html links to non donors, or just remove them completely. There can always be others who can share the files in other ways... Some linux distros already offer torrent only downloads.

But note that torrent works better with bigger seeds, so i guess you could have a single torrent with the biggest version of foobar, and all the plugins (they don't need to be in the same installer tho).

I also agree with the ease of use. forget the "enhanced" clients, use the official, from here http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/ you just install it and next time you click a .torrent link, it will start the transfer. It can't be easier than this, but even so, you can have the .torrent file downloaded and have it opened with this program to start the transfer.

Try to avoid having many small torrent seeds, its more efficient to have few and big seeds, maybe offer all of rarewares files as a single torrent, in my opinion would be very good.

No... that wouldn't work at all with RareWares.

An user would have to redownload the entire file collection in RareWares (more than 30Mb, not considering the AAC files in Brazil) whenever a new OggDropXPd was released. Also, you would download all versions of files you should be downloading only one version, like the several OggEnc and OggDropXPd flavours and optimizations. You would also download the sources, although they are only interesting for developers and people with a compiler.

I agree with offering some of the most popular files at RareWares through BT (Lame, OggDropXPd). But forcing people to download everything every time they want to update something would only serve to waste everyone's bandwidths.
Artemis3
Just 30mb? laugh.gif

Ok, ok, i suppose having the small seeds is better than going back to regular html linkies... Just have them always seeded (1 is enough), it can only get better than the traditional method. Make sure you put one of those nice tracker stat scripts so ppl can watch how many are downloading the same thing, available seeds, etc.

There is an apache module in the works for automatic torrenting of downloads, i wonder how it will be when finished..
plonk420
i suggest either the original bittorrent client or the experimental client or shad0w's client. a lot of people like Azureus, but i don't particularly like it (i dunno why)... just google (without quotes) "experimental bittorrent" or "shad0w bittorrent". Azureus is on sf.net and is among the most active and/or downloaded at the moment...

the other bittorrent clients tend to be flakey at reporting stats to servers if they track to see who's leeching without uploading most (and choose to ban pure leechers with less than .5 or .2 share ratio). some also don't support multi-tracker torrents.

oh, and torrents seem to be most effective if a) you have a lot of people dedicated to seeding (i don't mind seeding fb2k full as it doesn't use much of my upstream) or b) it's 80-200 megs and there are a lot of people (so that they minimize their window and let it run for several hours or even forget and let it run for a while longer). nudity also seems to make torrents popular biggrin.gif
