Full Version: CD-R Data Vs CD-R Audio

Metallo
Hi,

I have read some post around in the forum, I am testing in this moment two media:

TDK CD-R XG Audio
Verbatim DataLife Plus AZO

I have burned the TDK at 4x and the Verbatim at 1x.
But, what impresses me is the difference you can hear in sound.
The midrange is more present in the Audio CD and the sound is in general "warmer".

Are you aware of any CD-R data media whose sound is reproduced better than Verbatim? (I mean warmer)

Just for your information, I am certainly a bit spoilt and difficult, 'cause my main listening source is vinyl, in principle for me CD has never been a quality format, SACD and DVD-A are much better, but that's another story...
This is to give you an idea why, I am looking for the "best in the worst" in terms of CD-R Media.

Thanks guys
Alex

And that, children, is called "placebo".
Don't try it at home!

Seriously, Metallo: please read this

I think he's trolling. Why? Nobody showing such stupidity would be interested in visiting HA in the first place.

I think he is not.
I just read all his posts (there were few), and I think he is really that... hmm... misinformed.

A 0 is a 0, and a 1 is a 1... When will people learn that?

I'm outta here. dry.gif

Once again, Ladies & Gentlemen ... laugh.gif

The only possible difference betwen dedicated audio and data media are error rates.

Error rates do not only depend on the media - write speed, write strategy and firmware are as important as plain media quality.

Your description of the "sound pheomenon" is called placebo because you did know which CD was playing and therefore have been influenced.

If you are interested in testing this under objective circumstances:

Let a friend come to your place and create a playlist randomly playing both CD's

Let him blindfold you

Let him play the different CD's in without you knowing which actually plays.

Your task will be to determine which CD actually plays.

Afterwards, you will compare your results.

Other than that, CD-R Audio are at least two times more expensive than CD-R Data wink.gif

When I play mp3s that I have copied onto my other harddisc they sound better laugh.gif

The only major difference with audio CD-Rs is that audio only CD recorders can generally only record on these kind of discs (not standard CD-Rs) and that I think there is a surcharge on them.

Some people who posted here should re-read the forum rules. The part about harsh responses to statements that violate rule #8 being tolerated, is gone! So please - if you're not in a bad mood and don't feel like posting something useful, just don't post at all. Feel free to use the "Report" button if you think a moderator should have a look at a post/thread.

I'll close this thread - sorry to the few ppl who tried to be helpful.

Metallo: You should re-read the rules as well, especially #8.

Claims like this are not welcome here without evidence (double blind listening tests aka ABX, uploaded samples) and will not be tolerated. You'll find all information how to perform ABX tests in the FAQ and using the search. In your case you should do this:
  • Make sure that both CD-Rs are recorded under identical circumstances (no normalizing with one of them etc.)
  • Record your CD player's output with your soundcard (lineout->linein or better digital connection) with both CD-Rs playing
  • Use some wave editor to cut test samples from identical positions
  • Try to ABX. Ideally use foobar2000's abx tool with replaygain enabled (default) to avoid volume differences.
  • Post the results here and - if you abxed successful - upload the losslessly compressed samples (< 30 seconds) you used for others to reproduce your results. You can use "Uploads" forum for this.
If you're finished with this feel free to start a new thread to post your results or PM me and I'll re-open this one. If you continue posting quality-related claims without evidence violating rule #8, this will result in warnings.
