gday..

let me start with saying..

i know it would help to get some tech. papers on it..

but i don`t have.. and i neither have meassured it..
what i realy wan`t to do is.. hook upp my marantz cd player to a
35 years old tube amp. which have a phono & tape(R2R)
input.. do any one know if this is duable..
is the R2R input adjusted to R2R machines..
or is it a standard line-input..?

my reason for trying to use this.amp..

2x45-66 w. class A
adjustable output gain

i guess i would have used it as phono amp.. regardless..
great sound, great looking.
but it would be sweet to use cd on it to..

no problem at all. the tape input should be a standard line level input the is compatible with any consumer cd player.

brett
Xenion
tape inputs are high level inputs. cd players work with it.

i also have a tube pre amp
n68
gday..

so is there any "workaround" for this..
or do i box the project..

the amp. consist of 4 tubes & 16 transistors
on a pretty small print..

am guessing it would be possible to
replace the entire input.. or..

If its a "hybrid" its not 67-70 years old.
Maybe 30-35.
If I was you, I'll not try to modificate it, in any way.

I don't understand what you're saying n68 - if it has a line level equivalent tape input, why can't you use that for your CD player?

A warning: I have 2 valve amplifiers from 1962 and the tape inputs on both of those are not flat, and not line level. Just like a phono cartridge requires a high gain and RIAA eq, so a tape head requires high gain and the appropriate EQ. These input stages were designed to take the signal _directly_ from the tape deck head. Of course all modern tape decks have all appropriate gain and replay EQ built in, and are not compatable with these kind of inputs.

There will almost certainly be a place in the circuit where you could injet a line-level signal (a tape output can be appropriate for this on old amps - strange but true, since it's just tapped off the intput to the volme control + power amp), but you should be very careful playing with old valve amps - very high voltages are floating around inside.

Cheers,
David.

Ciao..

sorry for my late reply..
(easy to get distracted atm. lot of things going on here..)

anyway..

that`s the "problem".. i don`t think it is.. coz. the input as i gather
is tuned for the spesific load from a real to real..

on the other hand.. after a quick look.. it seems to me that
the only thing that would separate this from a standard line level..
is some resistors.. if it is so.. i assume theese can easely
be changed.

but to be safe.. before doing anything.. i wanted to ask around.

@LIF.

this is a Tanberg from 1968.
very high quality constructions i belive.. since Tanberg did sign
a small but nevertheless crucial deal with american NASA about this point..

bwt. the reason it`s so bloddy hard to get hold of papers
on theese constructions.. is that (a bit history):

in the late 70`s.. tanberg company expanded with the "buy"
of "radionette" which was primarily owned by norwegian broadcasting..
(owned by the state).. this was the beginning of the end of Tanberg..

as late as 90-92 you could buy Tanberg amp`s & a cd player..
(very high quality & expencive stuff.) but made on lisence from
the family.
since aprox 78.. you can find theese constructions in amp`s from
ex: "crown" later in "Thule" and is the basic in norwegian "electrocompany"
(some is water cooled valve amp`s.)

hope this is readable..

I agree totally.. Usually old stuff is better quality. Actually I think technological innovation only goes backward, so that we get worse and worse technology. NASA only use old and proven technology in their mars lander and see how successful it was. The one that crashed had newer electronics of worse quality. That's why I only buy really old computers. It's getting tough to find them now, and to find programs that actually run on them. But I can spend the time looking for it, and I can spend the time waiting for it to load programs, because I know that I have high quality. Same goes for cars - no innovation last 50 years...
