Full Version: Thinkin' about future

There are some questions that seem to be important when one's encoding : will I need to transcode my MPCs ?
I don't care about mp3-players like Rio,... but I have to think about the fact that MPC may disappear in the future to come.

Will MPC soon "die" ?

What could be better, supposing MPC is doomed :
-encoding with Xtrem, just thinkin about decoding MPC to wave, then burning them on large-roomed DVDs?
-encoding with braindead (or insane) thinkin' that transcoding is future?

Extra question: until which "lame preset" or bitrate can I hope to transcode my extreme MPC to ogg/mp3?

Thanks for reading:)

Actually MPC is at the moment the fastest developing encoder. There were "doomsday profets" already 8-10 months ago, but the development phase of Musepack has just increased.

Sure, it's not probable that Musepack ever becomes mainstream, but it definitely does not look like it's gonna die soon.

Your both other questions are very subjective. Probably in 2-3 years you could just decode your files to wav/lossless. On the other hand xtreme transcoded files would probably be just fine in possible proprietary portable use, though in the future many will no doubt use some PDA with mpc decoder.

Your last question is totally subjective and depends on your quality demands, equipments etc.

So, you think that MPC will be able to get read by Portable player.
Many people say that's impossible.
I trust you:)

Maybe I didn't understand : What is PDA?
To summarize your reply, I guess you're telling me I'd better use Xtrem safely and shut the fuck up .
Am i wrong ? wink.gif

As long as you are using mpc you will always have very very high quality files.
if you wanna use xtreme, insane, or braindead really is a matter of how well you are gonna sleep.
As long as you are using mpc the audible difference will be nearly none-existing.

PDA is a "Personal Digital Assistant"
It's a palmtop, like Palm, iPAQ, Cassiopeia, Sharp Zaurus...

why aren't MPC ever going to go in portable?? is it because of licenses issues??
tonderai
limited mass appeal at the moment - its very much a niche compared to the mp3 masses. so spread the word wink.gif

i don't know about license issues.

cheers, tonderai

Yes. It uses MP2 and PNS patented algorithms.

And the hardware manufacturers are hardly interested in supporting it, since the demand is so low. (Audiophile community)
