I think many people needs global user variables if Foobar2k!!!
I mean variables not only in local playlist entry!!!
could you be more specific? i've read your post 3 times and i'm still not sure what you're talking about ...
He wants access to information on all tracks within the title formatting string. Heck, let's make it all information in the database.
This feature was already requested in
another topic, a poll in fact, and has been voted on several times.
... and I still think it's a stupid idea.
kode54, yes, it *is* a stupid idea ...
however i'm not 100% sure that it is what daser wants ...

"there is at least 30% propability, that user may be requesting global formatting-string with persistent variables - bleep - need more info or decryption-upgrade."

yep, maybe lyx. would they be of any use other than reading them inside formatting stuff? i mean would modifying them help with anything?
me, i could use something like global user's sets (list view), which you could query inside of tagz like this $inset(set_name, item_name). you could have one or maybe even more lists, named by user. these sets could contain exceptions like directories for which the string should use specific display mode etc.
not that needed, anyway ...
hmm, yes.... but would it be worth all the hassle? I mean, as soon as you get new folders on your hd, you would need to add them to the string, unless you order your files in folders like "various", "albums", etc.
I dont know, seems to be more work than use to me. Also, albumlist formattingstrings already require the user to have his files sorted a certain way in the playlist.... should formatting-strings in addition to that also require the user to build his directorystructure a certain way? just for a "formatting string" ?
I suppose the main use of a global formatting string would be code which repeats, like tag-guessing, and centralized config.

i'm not saying that we will get it. and you wouldn't put all your folders in it, just the exceptions, for which automatic in-tagz mode detection would fail. of course, sorting these files or retagging them would be better idea.
another possible use: enable specific, less-strict corrections for some albums. i'm talking about artist <-> title swapping etc. these would come handy only if you do not want to retag your files. however in that case you would probably disable database writing and thus it would be safe to modify metadb info to be correct (and maybe back it up using playlists or by third-party util like my tag exporter).
it was something i wanted early when writing my formatting string and i can live without it / use better solutions now.

I mean:
$varput(name,text or num)
If i defined it sometime then i must recive it anytime:
$varget(name)
For example to audit chenges of files path in playlist for making tree like in Apollo player.

I would also like to have global variables with the ability to $putglobal(). This would make it possible to get highest album track in playlist f.ex, and probably some other things as well.. like total album length and total album filesize.
