Topic say pretty all, is the ripper and the aac encoder of winamp 5 are good enough to be trusted ?

I have noticed that with Winamp 5.01, the AAC encoder cuts frequencies above 18 KHz - even at 192 kbps.

Myself, I wouldn't trust the ripper; as for the AAC encoder, we'll probably see about it with Roberto's upcoming AAC test... smile.gif

From my own tests the ripper isn't really all that great in Winamp. Usually more pron to errors then CDex or EAC in normal read modes. Not sure about the AAC Encoder, though. (MP4 encoder should hopefully be in the next release).

yo Sawg. Well dude, you better hope for those new AAC playback improvements (mp4 & HE support, etc) soon. Winamp, Shoutcast, and Nullsoft in general are in a period of change, and GREAT uncertanty... Those not in the know about the latest Nullsoft/AOL happenings will be soon enough.

Winamp already supports MP4/M4A playback.

HE AAC is quite unlikely, IMO, because their decoder is licensed from Dolby and they have their own low bitrate enhancement technique ("DolbyAAC").

You're right rjamorim. I should have added "Nullsoft sanctioned" before that remark. I did not know it handles mpeg4 wrapper, I read somewhere else on a recent post, not sure which, that said it doesn't. :/ wink.gif

Winamp handles mp4 container since ver. 5.02 - less then 3 days old...

Or maybe not, compadre...

It would be great to be able to compare the quality of Winamp's AAC implementation to the other more popular and tested choices, but you can only test so many codecs. And looking at the poll, maybe Winamp will not make the cut.

Hrm?

As I see it, the two winning competitors so far are "Compaact and Winamp" and "Real and Winamp"

It seems to me people want Winamp quite badly :B
