Hi and thanks for looking in.

I have a project long in the making and I need a little directional help.

I've got reels and reels of AM radio air checks made in the '70s & early '80s. Probably 250 hours worth. As is typical of these DX recordings, there's lots of background noise etc. I now wish to clean up these recordings and catalog them using my PC.

I've learned alot around here and elsewhere looking for software etc. But the choices are driving me off what I thought was a simple path. I'm not an audio expert although I have good working PC knowledge. I originally wanted to play the tapes on the old reel-to-reel cabled into a sound card and into the PC where I though some clean-up software would do the trick while recording the final product to HD. But it appears from discussions that it's a muliple step process.

Does anyone have any experience at this type of audio clean-up. I'm not interested in crystal clear clean-up as the static adds to the authenticty of the recordings ... but I do need to do something. I had thought the software would have some clean-up settings and filters which I could set and forget.

I need just a little direction as to a simple yet effective set-up and operation.

I have a Creative SB Live! Value (WDM) sound card in my PC and an old sony recorder. No software yet purchased or acquired.

Oh, and if anyone knows of a company that does this type of clean up for a reasonable fee, please let me know.

Thanks.
