Full Version: Replaygain usage

Hi.

I want to have a radio gain on my MPC files as I do with MP3Gain, but I can't find any docs on how to use replaygain.

The help speek about an "auto" switch but what does this switch ?

replaygain --listreport *.mpc suggests some modes but how can I apply these ?

I think I have to activate the replaygain support in the plug-in configuration (winamp) to have the changes to take effects.

It sounds like you already have the replaygain.exe needed for MPC ReplayGain. Do you have mppdec.exe also available?

If you have both of those programs, all you need to do is open a command prompt to your directory of MPC files and type: replaygain --auto *.mpc. Alternately, you can use Speek's frontend (found here) to do this. The readme included with his program tells you how to set it up.

That will generate and store the radio (individual track) and audiophile (album) replayagain values in the MPC files. I think it might try to generate an album value even if the songs in the directory are not all from the same album, so perhaps you'll want to separate your albums by directory before doing this. Even if you don't plan on using audiophone (album) gain, it's nice to have the correct values stored.

Then, make sure you have a fairly new Winamp MPC plugin. Go to Winamp's preferences window (ctrl + p), go to the Input subsection of the Plug-ins section, and open the .mpc Musepack configuration. Then, under ReplayGain settings, choose something like "ReplayGain and ClipProtect title based" or "ReplayGain title based | ClipProtect off". The former setting will further attenuate the volume if the plugin realizes that the output will clip, and the latter setting will apply the ReplayGain value no matter what.

To make your MPC's the same volume as your MP3gained MP3's, set the Headroom slider to K-14. (You might also want to set ClipProtect off if you want to guarantee similar volumes across all songs, although this could potentially cause noticeable clipping; let your ears and your music collection decide!)

That should be all you need to get ReplayGain working...

Can I make it work recursively on subfolders? Or do I have to make a little loop myself?

Case posted a quick fix that will make replaygain work recursively, calculating album gain individually for each directory. I tested it out, and it seems to work without any problems.

If you want to apply the same album gain to multiple directories (for example, if you have a 2-CD album with the albums separated by subdirectories inside the album directory), you can go to the album directory and type replaygain --auto . to process all the files at once.
